Tips for teaching a 5 year old to skate?

Recommended Posts

I'm taking my 5 year old (he'll be 5 in a week) nephew to the ice rink for the first time today. Anyone have any tips on teaching a youngster to skate? I have no memory of learning to skate, I was 3. I think they have those things that look like old-people walkers available for them to lean on so they don't fall over.

Are little kids' skates sized just like adult hockey skates, i.e. 1-2 sizes smaller than the shoe size? We're going to have to rent some skates for him.

just put the skates on him and give him a push to the other end of the rink and tell him to work his way back to you and walk away haha.....im just kidding im not that mean.....just stay calm with him cause he will react better and just hold his hand and try and teach him skating is not like walking you want to keep your blades on the ice and use your legs to push off and slid the skate on the ice not pick them up...
