nagging hamstring injury

Recommended Posts

i've got a very long (non-emergency) medical question for anyone who may be able to help:

about 10 years ago, at the age of 13, i managed to hurt myself pretty bad during pre-game warm-ups for soccer. (state cup, no less)

i went in to shoot on net and tripped, while shooting with my left (weak) leg. my leg was bent at the knee, and rotated medially, like when shooting with the outside of the laces. i then fell forward (toward the net).

i could not get up, or even crawl, and had to be carried off the field. it was extremely painful. i remember missing school the next day to go to the doctor as i could barely walk.

my regular doctor at the time diagnosed it as a hip pointer and gave me a referral to a physical therapist. i can't recall now how long it was before the physical retracted the hip pointer diagnosis, but i don't think it was immediately - and i remember him stretched my leg in ways that felt like it was making my leg a lot worse. he decided afterward that it was a torn hamstring (probably a couple sessions later)

i'm not sure how long i was in physical therapy - but it was around 3~4 months (twice a week). massages, stretching, electric muscle stimulation, ultrasound, resistance, etc. during therapy i also became aware of another injury - i'm not sure if it occurred at the time of the hamstring tear or during therapy - but it's on the inside of my thigh, up near my junk (not trying to be gross, just descriptive), towards my butt.

i was pushed by my parents to start playing again, after being cleared by the therapist, but probably before i was ready. i'd make it through a couple of practices, then make a wrong step or follow-through when kicking, and be done for a couple more weeks. happened for a couple months until i was cut for being injured. took some time off to get better, i played at a less competitive level for a year, and continued.

ever since then, any time i've ever run, my leg bothers me (both injuries). i played seriously up until 18, and always did a quick warm up lap before stretching. i did cross country for a couple years in high school. on 'good days' it would be annoying and sore, and on bad days, walking was painful and i'd limp after a game or practice. i can also feel a 'pop' where i was hurt if i gradually stretch my hamstring, say to touch my toes.

i've pretty much stopped running, and skating doesn't aggravate it much or at all. but i want to get into better cardiovascular shape and both running and biking do hurt. rather than finding an alternate activity, i'd really like to fix the problem.

i never thought that hamstring injuries could stick around that long. is the fact that it's nagged me for so long consistent with his diagnosis? obviously rehab didn't work the first time, and stretching hasn't fixed anything... is surgery a possible fix for something like this? if so, do they do MRIs to evaluate?

just wondering if anyone has had similar experience, or may know from the description of the injury what it may or may not be. any help is appreciated as i'm not sure when i can make it to the doctor. i'm sick of this injury.

thanks...

I've had a hip pointer linger for about seven years.

I was also able to skate but not run. Too bad I was a football player at the time.

Had team doctors/therapist treat me for the longest time but nothing worked except time.

Good luck.
