Help on Mission Bearings please...

Recommended Posts

My 2 month new Mission Soldiers are encountering a small problem. The wheels on the right skate are making a grinding noise when skating. I took the wheels apart and the bearings themselves are making the noise when I spin them. They are the Mission ABEC 7 bearings, and I'm not sure if the shield is even removable... I put some lube on them without taking the bearing apart but it didn't help the noise issue at all. If there's anyone with knowledge or experience on these, I would appreciate some ideas.

You cannot remove the shield on any Mission bearings. Does the wheel still spin at the same speed as it used to or does it immediately stop? You can inspect the bearing shields to see if there are any dents or anything. A dent would cause the shield to rub up against the ball bearings inside and slow them down while also making an annoying noise. Another possibility is that one of the balls was not constructed properly and has cracked or split. I would contact Mission because I'm sure they will send you a replacement as you've only had that skates for 2 months.

Otherwise you can just buy some new bearings like bones that do have removable shields. The removable shields are nice because you can fix them but they are higher maintenance.

They still basically spin well, I'm not entirely sure that they're any slower. It might just be a cosmetic issue, but it certainly is annoying on what are essentially new skates...

Well it could just be a crack in one of the bearings then. Either way that is a sign that the bearing is about to go. That's more than just a cosmetic issue. You can skate on it that way if you want though. Its not like you can break an already broken bearing.

That'd be weird because all of the bearings on the right skate are making the noise but none on the left skate are... I might have to contact Mission on Monday.

Really? Are you sure its the bearings? I had something similar happen to me once and it turned out that my chassis was bent. The noise I was hearing was one of my wheels scraping up against the chassis. Even a light touch will make noise. If you took the bearings out and they're making that noise individually then I'm not sure. If you have any other bearings laying around the house you could pop those in and try em.

I tested the bearings individually and they are apparently the source of the problem. I'm not sure if maybe the chassis was a touch off and that caused the bearing problem or what. But I'm not a super hard skater, I only weigh a hedge under 150...

No, when the wheels are in place you can look at the chassis and see if the wheels touch the chassis. If that doesn't happen then your chassis is probably fine. I'm talking about a major chassis dent where you can visibly see your wheels touching it. My chassis bent from blocking a shot so I don't know if you've blocked any shots lately. I would just try to get new bearings from Mission.

If all of the bearings on one skate are making the noise I would have to guess that the bearings are slightly rusted. Do you make sure to air them out or have they been sitting in your wet bag? That is the only situation I can think of that would cause an entire skate to be messed up.

Also, I have the Mission Titanium bearings (red sidewalls, came with the Boss) and those shields are removable. I would think the ABEC 7s are the same way but I am not sure. Basically you just need to get a safety pin and run it along the rail (inside rail works best) and get underneath the sidewall. The wall should then pop off fairly easily.
