Pad Vocabulary/Terminology

Recommended Posts

Hello all:

In reading here and elsewhere over the last few months and I am still struck by how ignorant I am in terms of some of the vocabulary/terminology in regards to goalie pads- more specifically leg pads/leg channel of leg pads. Terms such as "calf wrap" and "calf wedge" fly right over my head.

Do any of you know a good place to find definitions of the different parts which make up a leg pad?

Thank you!

a leg channel is something that holds the leg in place below the knee. Usually 2 thin pieces that go around the calf and run down toward the ankle. Not all pads have them and its a matter of preference.

see these velocities

a calf wrap is usually a velcro strap that wraps around the calf. its a more elaborate and constricting form of leg channel.

the middle shot here

a calf wedge is between the calf and the ice, and holds your leg off the ice.

you can see the wedge along the inside of the calf in the 2nd from the left

hope this helps
