New equipment for me...comments?

Recommended Posts

So I'm wanting to get into a men's league next year and am wanting to get some ideas about equipment. Here is the list I have compiled:

Blocker: http://www.thehockeyshop.com/Merchant2/mer...e=S_Blockers_Sr

Catch: http://www.thehockeyshop.com/Merchant2/mer...e=S_Trappers_Sr

Chest/Arm: http://www.thehockeyshop.com/Merchant2/mer...ChestandArms_Sr

Legs: http://www.thehockeyshop.com/Merchant2/mer...de=S_LegPads_Sr

Mask: http://www.thehockeyshop.com/Merchant2/mer...Code=S_Masks_Sr

Pants: http://www.thehockeyshop.com/Merchant2/mer...S_Pants_Goal_Sr

Cup: http://www.thehockeyshop.com/Merchant2/mer...ode=S_Goal_Jock or http://www.thehockeyshop.com/Merchant2/mer...ode=S_Goal_Jock This is the most important of them all :)

What do you think? The total comes to about 3.5g. Id like below 3g if possible, but protection is my #1 concern with flexibility/weight my #2. I've been using used stuff for years now and want to invest in some new stuff (now that I have a nice paying job :) ). Next year I'll be looking into getting this stuff but I want an idea now how much to start setting aside for when the league starts up next year (since I just missed the tryout date this year due to my move). Thanks.

If you want to save a pile and get basically the same pads and gloves (in fact, arguably better) custom made, go through Smith. If you're absolutely in love with the break on Velocity gloves (as opposed to say the 5500), then sure, go with the Vaughn gloves. Otherwise, save yourself several hundred dollars and get the custom sizing and options through Smith.

You can't do any better than that Brown C/A, and the Vaughn pants are terrific (provided you like a fairly close fit), but I'd seriously consider upgrading the mask. The NV7 has not had a great track record. It's by far the weakest piece of gear you have there. If anything, get the Smith pads and gloves, get a McKenney C/A instead of the Brown, and put the extra money into a custom mask from, say, Warwick or Pro's Choice or whoever you like. If you just don't want to dump much cash into the mask, go for a Hackva or a Sportmask Razor/Ricochet instead of the NV7.

Like I said... if you're looking for better quality retail masks around your price-point, look for Hackva and Sportmask. Quantum might be another option, but they're hard to find in stores.

If you want to go custom, there are about a dozen solid options. Warwick and Pro's Choice are worn by several NHLers, and have very strong track records for a premium price; Stacey I've heard great things about as well.

Just google the names and you'll get the websites and a pile of reviews/discussions.

I second what Law Goalie said in that if you're going to spend that money, you are better off with a Hackva or Sportmask. Olie masks aren't too bad either. I've used one for three years now and I've played with some AAA and D1 hockey players.

i've always found that any cup that looked protective works. Though, I have heard that the new thing to do is to have double cups buy having a normal cup/players jock under a goalie jock. Thats apparently better than vaughn's double cup. I have no idea what the difference, but thats what i've heard.

^^ Yup. You want a cup in your base layer, and a padded goalie cup over top. That double-cup system is way more protective than any integrated double-cup jock out there.

HOWEVER, if you have a double-jock that integrates well with your pants, get that. The key thing is maintaining protection without sacrificing agility.
