Presidential Visits for Stanley Cup Winners

Recommended Posts

Do Canadian teams who win the cup get extended an invitation to the White House when they win a cup? Do they visit the Prime Minister of Canada? What about the Toronto Blue Jays or Raptors?

I googled around, but can't find it...When did that tradition start? Habs won the Cup in '93...Jays won WS in '92/'93. There hasn't been a Major sport won by a Canadian team since...I seem to think the tradition started in the mid-late 90's

well i know the cup has visited reagen bush clinton and bush so I think the tradition is a little older than that. I don't know if it was always an annual thing though

Well, the NY Islanders took the cup to the White House in '83... that's the oldest record I found:

According to this wikipedia article, not sure of the accuracy though (being wikipedia and all): "It was also a White House guest of Ronald Reagan,[20] George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush,[21] and it is currently a tradition of the US President to invite the NHL champion if the team is from an American city. It is also the same tradition for the Prime minister of Canada to invite the winners, if it is a Canadian team that wins, to Ottawa."
