Slalom skates for hockey

Recommended Posts

Im feeling pretty down about my skates at the moment, so Im looking around at options.

I have a pair of Mission Assassin Jr. Lengthwise they fit well enough, however:

1. They are too narrow across the front of the foot

2. My ankle bones sit higher than the ankle pockets

3. The outside ankle pocket on the left foot is too shallow (even if they did line up correctly)

4. My feet are two different sizes (size 5 and 5.5ish)

My main gripe is with my left outside anklebone being smashed against the outside of the boot, swelling, hurting for a week and then getting smashed again when I next go skating.

I live in one of those places where hockey (and skating in general) isnt particually big, so its not a case of go to another hockey store or drive 2-3 hours to the next state and see what skates they have. Its a case of jump on a plane and take a holiday to another state/country.

I have had my skates stretched by a local figure skating instructor (the only person I can find who can do it) and they were great for 3 weeks. Now they are returning to their factory shape and the pain is returning. Getting my skates punched every 3 weeks isnt really an option either, aside from having a turn around of about a week (the skate instructor takes them home with him, does his magic and brings them back the next week) I dont think my skates will handle much more of this.

Because of the placement of my anklebones I dont think working my way through the different brands of skates is going help very much either. Ideally, I would adore/love/beg/etc a pair of custom skates, but unless I can do it without renewing my passport and jumping on a plane from Australia to USA, its probably not going to happen in the near future.

Therefore, Ive been looking at other styles of skates. What do you guys think of slalom/freestlye skates e.g. Seba High

Obviously, Id need to change the wheels to something softer and maybe consider creating an artificial rocker. Aside from that, can anyone think of any issues?

True, Im just a beginner, it may seem silly to spend a week's wages on skates alone, but I never liked field hockey.

There really isn't anything wrong with using slalom skates for hockey if your comfortable in them, the plastic on them is pretty strong and solid, far better than recreational skates, and they give nice support. Since they are designed for doing those crazy slalom tricks (see reverse spread eagle...) they will give you plenty of forward flex. Really about the only downside to them is the weight and less feel due to the thick padding on the inside. Really, if they fit better for you than what you can get in hockey skates, go for it, they should last a while (no worries of outsole separation, softening of the boot etc). Slaloms are able to give a surprisingly snug fit, and your foot will get hotter than in a hockey skate. Seba make some good stuff ;)

you could also look for a women's specific ice boot like the Betty series from Mission that is built to fit a woman's foot vs a men's foot and have the chassis put on there

As sdcopp mentioned you could try the Betty series of ice skates, they are based on the same design as the Amp sereis of ice skates.

Are they a current skate? This was the best I could find clicky
