They're an interesting design and well-made by the much-respected Dave Agatone. The basic design is built around Lefebvre's RBK skeleton, so to speak, but with several interesting refinements: chiefly the angled breaks, sliding toe-bridge (with due thanks to Dr. Smith) and the anatomical calf-wedge. There's a very good chance Luongo will be wearing them at some point, since the president of GDI (Ian Clarke) is his personal goalie coach and the goalie coach for the Canucks. Corey Schneider has already been working in GDI gear for a while, so it's really just a matter of when it becomes worthwhile for Luongo to withdraw from his very lucrative RBK endorsement deal and for GDI to pay the NHL's goalie category fee (which I think is $60K for pads & gloves).

I'm sure you've noticed that the GDI marketing description of the equipment are somewhat... lavish. Ian's verbosity is something of an in-joke for the goalie community; brilliant man, unfortunately predisposed to a predilection and propensity for purple prose.

The only real trouble is the price -- you can get custom RBK, Vaughn, or Brian's gear for that, and they're known quantities. Apart from the guys on the Left Coast who have been able to demo these through stores or at GDI camps, most people will be ordering them sight-unseen. Basically, if you like a stiff pad with an completely open leg-channel, GDI should do nicely.

GDI is starting to put their pads in select stores. We are the dealer for the southeast (Deleware - Florida) and just had a little Demo day for goalie equipment. We had some very positive feedback from the customers that came in the shop and are excited to get our stock in the coming weeks. So if any goalies are in or come through the Raleigh, NC area, Five Hole Sports will carry the GDI pads.
