White felt tongue question

Do the white felt tongues compress over time, so that their effectiveness in taking up volume lessens? It seems to me in looking at old skates with felt tongues, the tongues look kind of compressed.

You'd imagine that anything that's under constant pressure, soaking up sweat and water would compress over time. Especially such an absorbent material like felt/foam.
