Hockey politics

Recommended Posts

I think the politics are everywhere but especially where there are open tryouts for elite teams. In the local youth hockey association in my area (Hershey, PA) the competition for the boys to make the Quebec team is fierce and most of the team is picked before tryouts even start.

I didn't experience this personally since I don't have a son who plays, but my daughter did experience it when she first tried out for the USA Hockey festival camps. She is an elite player and all her coaches said she deserved to go but she couldn't get picked to the festival camp her first year. At the district tryouts there were nearly 100 girls on the ice, so nobody was really getting a hard look. The decisions had already been made.

The festival camp is a pretty big deal because the girls who make it get a lot of exposure to college coaches. So what did we do? As parents, we played the political game. We made friends with the people running the district tryouts. Last spring at the district tryouts, she did get picked. She went to the festival camp last summer in Lake Placid, and did great.

I just moved and tried out for tier1. despite being better then the majority of the people i played against, they still cut me, now iam in tier 2, and honestly, no word of a lie, I can basicly score a goal when ever I choose too. If I want to score, I can pick up the puck and i would say 7/10 times skate through the entire team and score.

Last time I moved, this happend and I scored 7 goals in my first game, then the rep team brought me up and i was on the first line. Amazing how that works huh?

I understand very well what you mean crosskore. My brother is in the same situation than you.

Otto, that is the one thing that perplexes me. There are obviously a lot of politics and dubvious dealings. Yet the scouts and college coaches seem to flock to these events, and ignore other equally valid venues, like Junior A/B and midget showcases. What is with that?
