Is this overkill for a skater?

My junk never seems to stay in place. I've tried all different types of jocks but have had a few close calls and don't want to chance it anymore. Do these fit snug? Will it hamper my skating?

Is this a better choice for a skater?

Any other jock suggestions?

I guess it depends on your body and skating type/position. I know a guy who wears a goal cup on Defense because it covers not just the Boys, but the upper pelvis too. The second one would probably be the less bulky of the two if you're worried about inhibiting your skating.

I wear a goalie jock when I play, mainly as I do a fair amount of blocking shots. Like Wex said, its got the upper pelvis protection which is pretty good.

I wear it with a wrap girdle, so it doesnt hamper movement.

fatwabbit, what jock do you use?

wex12, do you happen to know which jock he has?

Others, please list the jock you use if you reply.

Thanks.

It's a Brians Camo colored. I remember when our rink had a shop, we used to carry some Cheap Jock from Perani's that was Labeled as a Defenders cup. It was beefier than a regular jock. But not as huge as a Goalie Cup. I forget the manufacturer.

You definitely don't want to get into the double-cup designs like the Eagle, Vaughn Epic, Brian's Thief/DX2/Zero-G, etc.

I still wear my old D&R goalie jock under my player gear for much the same reasons others have mentioned: the pelvic shield, the extra protection, etc.

The older Brian's Pro Goaler jock is an excellent one for this application; that 'Pro Guard' jock you linked to is almost exactly the same design. The Vaughn Velocity jock you linked to would be OK, but because its pelvic shield is fixed, rather than floating (as on the Brian's and Pro Guard), it'll feel considerably bulkier.

If you want absolute protection, get a Jofa cup or a normal Bike cup and wear it either right next to the skin or in the cup-pocket/pouch of a pair of compression shorts, and throw a low-profile goalie jock over that. You'll never feel a shot again.

No, way older than that! :)

If you look closely, however, you'll notice that the D&R jock you linked to is very similar to some of the more protective player jocks (the Bauer one, IIRC, is a good example). The whole problem with having a big hunk of padding across your pelvis is that it restricts your ability to make powerful crossovers: a non-issue for goalies, but a huge one for everyone else. The two ways to get around this problem are to use a relatively narrow design (like that D&R), or a floating shield.

My suggestion is to pop them on in the store over your cloths, throw on a pair of pants, and try to simulate crossovers. If you feel restricted there, it'll be worse on the ice. The key thing is to get a jock that works well with your pants.
