Help switching from forward to defense...

Recommended Posts

So a question then. I always thought reserve cross overs were used for the initial few strides for speed then to adjust positioning horizontally. Should you just use C-Cuts to adjust?

If the player is coming straight down or at a slight angle C cut, if he starts to go wide start thinking about pivoting and going with him. A good player will watch what you are doing or have been doing the entire game. If he sees you doing big reverse cross overs to try and catch him wide he has a couple of options; watch you cross over toward him and cut the opposite way or slow up a bit or chip the puck past you then hit speed. Both of these options can leave you trying to pivot in the middle of a cross over or the opposite way your feet are moving. As soon as this happens your feet are tangled up and you eaither land on your butt or are trying to catch up.

Just like playing forward, don't get caught flat footed (standing still) and play your space off the boards correctly. Learning to play D correctly takes more time than learning to play forward. Watch the vets on your team and don't be afraid to ask questions.
