beerleaguecaptain 1004 Report post Posted March 8, 2010 Instead of using a traditional coaches hockey bag I would rather use a backpack. It would need to hold my tools, clipboard, med kit and gloves and helmet. The skates could either go inside if large enough or clip to the outside through the holders.Has anyone seen a coaches backpack like this? I don't want some huge player size backpack. J22 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2010 Just to give you an idea of what size you might be looking for i have this backpack http://www.hockeymonkey.com/bauer-hockey-back-pack.htmlI can fit my size 10.5 skates, NB 4500 helmet and 14 inch NB 4 rolls along with a clipboard inside, it is a fairly tight fit. I cant say for sure you would be able to fit all the things you listed inside of it but you can hopefully get an idea of what size you are looking for
Viking 1 Report post Posted March 9, 2010 What about just a big regular backpack - like one for hiking/camping or something?
Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted March 9, 2010 Exactly - check out REI, aka MEC for Americans. They'll have a bunch of inexpensive, quite well-constructed bags in and around the right size. You should be able to get a decent internal-frame pack that will hold everything you need it to, with a ton of exterior pockets left over, for under a hundred bucks - and it'll be a godsend the next time you travel or hike. Most of the 'hockey backpacks' are just cheap sacks with even cheaper straps sewn on; they fall apart remarkably quickly unless you take them to a shop and have them reinforced, and even then, they're not terribly useful. The basic problem is that alpine packs (whether internal- or external-frame) have converse design goals from hockey bags, and goalie bags in particular. Alpine packs are designed to comfortably support high-density loads (moderate volume, very high weight), and hockey bags are meant for low-density (tons of volume, especially for goalies, but a fraction of the weight of a true rucksack). I only know of two well-designed hockey backpacks - and I do mean *two*, since they're both prototypes. There are a few military packs that might also work well for coaching purposes; an Army/Navy surplus store might be a good place to hit up. The one annoying thing about most of them is that they're draw-string closure at the top, so they're often a pain to sift through without dumping the whole thing out. beerleaguecaptain 1004 Report post Posted March 9, 2010 I saw the Bauer bag online but it looks so small... hard to believe it fits all that... wow! Going to one of the camping stores is a great idea. I'm not sure I want a frame but I'm sure they will have big packs with lots of loops and pockets that I can even mod if I want. Great suggestion. Thanks.
