Local Sacramento Hockey Rink Burns Down

Iceland hockey rink in Sacramento (built in 1940) burned down this morning. I never had the chance to play there but I find it sad to think that there is now one rink in the entire Sacramento area and the area will now lose a historical site.

That's too bad. I don't know if they had ice leagues there, as I always heard about only the Roseville rink when I was in college up at Davis. I think the Sacramento area could potentially be a huge hockey town if it were marketed heavily.

Thanks for posting that! It breaks my heart to lose that rink! I grew up playing there! Up until this morning we coached and still played there a couple nights a week! The worst part is, that fire has displaced a hockey club full of good kids!

The inside word is that we will rebuild the rink! It will be tough especially since it was uninsured!

Damn shame! I hope they catch the guys that stole and burned the car behind the rink!

Sorry to hear about this terrible loss.

IMO the NHL and ECHL needs to step up to help rebuild the rink. Sure they don't have a local team but I bet plenty who skate there support the Sharks, Stockton Thunder, and the defunct Fresno Falcons. Come on teams do it!

Bad news: the building was not insured, I have no idea why not.

Good news: the ice rink and cooling system are still intact so a rebuild might not be so insanely expensive.

Our club pres. is the taking this the hardest. We had a learn to play hockey free program due to 30,000 dollars worth of donated hockey equipment for kids who couldn't afford to play and it all went up... :( All of it!

ICELAND will survive!
