comparison of CCM Vector 8.0 to Bauer RX.25

Recommended Posts

This is a review of my initial experience migrating from a CCM Vector 8 to a Bauer RX.25. Had a few pairs of the RBK or CCM skates all with the tri-di frames. Most recent pair was the Vector 8, which had the anodized blue frames and metallic blue accents on the boot (2008 model?). While the fit of the CCM's has been good for me, their durability has not. In all cases the boots have broken down sooner that I believe reasonable. I am not that fussy about my equipment. The pair before lasted about 4 months and the most recent pair a little over a year. I am 240#, fairly aggressive and skate 3-4 times a week, with at least 2 of those skates being mid level rec leagues. In my last pair, the internal liner separated and then the heel section foam began to disintegrate and chunk making it VERY uncomfortable. Additionally, the mid-section of the boot started cracking near the blue trim. Due to the newness of the Bauer RX I had trouble finding reviews. I tried both a 8.5 and 9.0, which the latter is the size of my outgoing CCMs. I went with the 9s due to excessive toe pressure at the end with the 8.5. The Bauers slip on much easier than the CCMs, but are very snug once laced. I do not miss the lace lock, which I thought I would. The best way I can describe the fit of the RX is that it is more pizza shaped with a slightly wider toe box just beyond the ball of your foot. Not loose by any means, just not wedged in there. The boot and sole of the RX seems slightly stiffer and feel noticeably more responsive. I am guessing this is the Hi-Lo Vanguard frame at work. The skates are definitely quicker, but I do not know if this is a function of the wheel size or increased boot stiffness. Maybe a little of both. Wheel types and bearings were comparable, so that did not play a factor. I did not bake mine and have about 15 skates on them. They are very comfortable, hold my heel snugly and seem to wrap/hold my entire foot better than the Assassins I also considered. Without a lot of playing time they seem to be holding up so far and I would definitely buy them again if I had to replace them (though I hope that is not anytime soon).
