Broken Ribs

Recommended Posts

So I'm playing in my first game after my broken thumb, everything with it is fine. I was skating along the boards and passing the puck to my center and a guy comes and hits me, my ribs hit the side of the boards (where the board and the glass meet) and didn't hear any crack but alot of pain suddenly hit my ribs but I don't complain and continue to play (that was in the first period) since I'm on the fourth line I don't play alot, on my second and first and last shift of the game, my teammate shoots the puck on the net and I was in front to get the rebound and the defenceman who was about 6 foot 6 and about 250 lbs just on my back completly and I suddenly hear a crack in my rib section(where I was previously getting alot of pain from). It happenned on friday and the pain isn't going away, I'm having trouble getting out of bed (can only sleep on my back and on my right side cause it's the left side wich I'm getting pain from) I'm having a bit a trouble trying to breathe, I can't cough without my ribs hurting like hell, I can't blow or yell like I used to. I've been wearing an elastic bandage for the past 2 days and I haven't went to the Hospital. I was just wondering if someone ever had broken ribs and what could and coudn't do?

I cracked a couple in our roller playoff finals a year or two ago. Well, I say "cracked", 'cause I did, but the doctors pretty much told me that there was little point X-raying it, as there's nothing you can really do for it. I mean, you can't stick your torso in a cast...

Basically, I didn't notice it too much during the game, but afterwards, I noticed that breathing in caused a sharp pain around my left ribs. For a few weeks afterwards, I could only sleep on one side, and getting out of bed (I.E, sitting up from lying on your back) was damn near impossible, without it hurting like hell.

Basically all you can do is rest, take painkillers if it's too sore, and don't let anything hit it.....

I cracked my tibs a few years a go when I was called up to the next age above me. I got hammered pretty good and cracked 2 ribs, I continued to play, the doctor was good about it. He told me I could play if I wanted as long as I could handle the pain (which is surprising because normally he's a pussy). He gave me some advils and told me to be on my way. I'd go check it out and see whats going on tfrom your doctors perspective, it does hurt and limits the things you can do (like coughing, stretching, sneezing all hurt), but you'll get through it. Sorry to hear about your luck.

Normal time for a recovery is about how many weeks??

It's hard to tell because it will keep getting re-aggrivated as you are going about things. Like if you have a cold it will be alot longer because the coughing and sneezing will make it that worse. I believe mine was about 4 weeks, but it slowly gets better everyday.

We played again St-Quentin, we won 6-5, they scored like 4 goals on the PP, only penalty they didn't score on I was on the PK. I am sure we will have an amazing team this season, extremely fast, considering that St-Quentin finished in first place last year and we finished sixth we improved our team. I am still not sure if I'll be making the team, with this injury, my chances are getting smaller and smaller. I will probably will be a replacement but with this injury I will probably be sidelined for a couple of weeks. I was also starting to train at the gym this week because we are on vacation so it sucks alot. I was thinking about getting new shoulder pads considering the ones I have right now I've been using them since Pee Wee and were a real cheap model.

EDIT: Alot of people considered our game to have the intencity of a playoff game. We dominated them but we will have to work on our faceoffs and our PK, our goally was also a bit shaky, it was his first Senior game, he played for the CDJ Reps last year.

Just got back from the hospital, I'm on pain killers for a while, my ribs are pretty mushed up, he doesn't know if they are broken but he can see damage. No hockey for a month (if something isn't broken) so that probably means I'm cut from the team. If they are broken no hockey for 2 months.

I've had a broken rib two years ago and the only thing I can recommed is TAKE YOUR TIME COMING BACK. I waited like 2 weeks, felt it was going better, went skating and without a hit or anything the whole mess returned even worse than before. Rib injuries are very enduring because you can't do much to heal it. If you try to return to the rink too early, it will only take longer so rather take your time and wait until you feel no more pain.

It's also importent for the first couple of weeks to remember to take deep breaths (even though it hurts). With broken ribs you tend to favor that side and if you don't take deep breaths your lung will gradually partially collapse (called atalectasis). This increases your risk of developing infection, etc.

With rest your ribs will heal in 4-6 weeks.

You can continue to do weight traing while you heal, take Advil for the pain.

Good Luck!!!

I take Tylenol #3 for the pain, they are a prescription pain killers. The doctor said no sports for a month ao I will listen to him and not do any. I just know that it I would do some weight training, I would push myself to hard. Also lying on my back(like I would do if I would bench press hurts) like hell so I won't take any chances. I will know today if they are broken cause the specialist is in town, if they are not, I'm only in for a month, if they are broken, nothing for 2 months. As for the team I was trying out with, I haven't talked to the coach yet, I will tonight when I go get my equipment in the team's locker room. He will see in a way that I have caracter cause I continued to play the game even though I was hurt but my chances of making the team are pretty slim.
