Using Sprungs outdoors

Recommended Posts

I have started skating outdoors, I have currently been using my old vapor XX with red star Mag chassis with indoor rink rat wheels. (crazy i know). Tonight I skated on my supreme 70 with sprungs on outdoor wheels and it felt like I was skating in treacle!

Has anyone experience 'the brakes on' effect? I have loosened the bolts but that didn't make a difference.

Anyone have an idea why they are so slow?

Weird. I was chatting with Joe Noris specifically about using Sprungs outdoors. He said the Sprungs should act like a car's suspension, creating strides that are fast and very smooth.

Not to insult your intelligence but the first time I used Sprungs, some of my wheels weren't spinning too well. I realized that there's a very specific way to orient the screws, and it can be confusing because the wheels will still work even if the screws aren't in the correct position.

i've used my sprungs about 25 times outdoors this year and no problems at all and i don't know why you would think they would restrict wheel motion outdoors. if your wheels aren't spinning properly only when outdoors then i suspect one of the following:

-your outdoor bearings are shot

-your outdoor wheels are cheap and have lower rebound than your indoor wheels (usually high durometer outdoor only wheels have decent rebound though)

-your outdoor wheels have poor manufacturing tolerances (sometimes the wheel geometry isn't correct and even if you use spacers, the bearings bind when you tighten your axle)

I use my outdoor-SPRUNGS (I have a indoor pair too :-) weekly 2 times and had trouble at the start (2 years ago) with a stopping feeling. First time the SPRUNG-chassis where mounted to forward on the boot an the polymer-sprung was overloaded by every stride and the front wheel rubs against the chassis. The second time i've used a new wheel type which on one side had a different geometry (an enhancement) and was grinding on one side at the rockerarms.

I've remounted the chassis, and i use this type of wheels as yet,but i mill them off on a CNC-Router before skating, because they are cheap and durable like Labeda asphalt grippers.

....and on rough asphalt is naturally the speed slower than on sport floor - and it is no better chassis out there with a skating on ice feeling like SPRUNGS.

greets from germany

Ive been skating on sprungs for quite a while now indoors, I got a pair of the original prototypes about 2 or 3 years ago now. So its not a case of not being used to them.

They move freely when i spin them, so no problems there, only thing im thinking is the profile on the wheels, they are 76mm Labeda Gripper Asphalt they seem very flat compared to my rink rats. Maybe its that which is causing the lake of speed.

Need to decide what to do before sunday as im skating a marathon!
