Where's a good balance point on a stick?

I know it is a matter of opinion, but in general is it ideal to have the balance point in the area of the centre of a stick? Naturally, all my sticks have balance points towards the blade (likely because of my liberal use of tape). I've been considering putting counter weights at the top.
