Skates: CCM quality? U+06 vs U+08?

Recommended Posts

I've been focusing in on the CCM U+ line as my first pair of skates but I'm having trouble deciding which model to get. The U+06 and U+08 both fit GREAT but seem to have very few differences other than $50. The more expensive U+10 model also seems incredibly similar. Answers from the LHS are lacking so I was hoping somebody had some info or recommendations. Is it mostly higher quality materials for more durability (how is the durability/quality of CCM skates compared to other brands, btw?) or am I missing something? I don't mind paying more for good skates but considering that they all fit with equal comfort, I'm curious what I am getting for my extra $50-110 if I were to bump up to the U+08 or U+10?

Also, although Bauer were too narrow and uncomfortable for me I'm not opposed to trying the other brands, in case anyone had anything bad to say about CCM or good to say about Easton/Reebok/anyone. Thanks!

The U+ 08 is the first skate in the line to feature the U Foam, which although obviously not as mouldable as in the U+12 or CL, is stil imo the most important feature in this line.

The number one key to skates is Fit Fit Fit! If the skates fit you and are comfortable then those are the skates for you. From everything I have read and seen regarding the CCM line is that durability is exceptional from the new U+ Line. As far as differences between the U+06-U+10 would be weight, different tounge, outsole(Where holder attaches to boot), steel and stiffness and quarter package, the U+08 and 10 have a similar (Presumably more durable quarter package).

If this is your first pair of skates and you are just getting into skating you do not want to go with too much boot (Stiff), that being said the U+06-10 are great skates.

I should also mention that if you can find CCM U+ Ovi Special Editions in your size I would recommend those as they are somewhere between a U+08 and U+10 and can be had for cheaper than a U+08 (229.99 on Hockey Monkey or Icewarehouse) and would be a great value for your money.

I had to try them on at different stores and on different days so a direct comparison is difficult but both the 06 and 08 fit great. I'm also not very concerned with weight as heavy inline wheels make all ice skates feel super light to me.

Why should I avoid a stiff boot though? Assuming that all the models fit equally well and comfortably, will the U foam, tongue, or "rugged armor" quarter of the 08 or 10 models protect my feet and ankles better against pucks or make a noticable difference in some other way? What advantages does a better outsole give? I will probably go try them on again tomorrow and pay more attention to the differences, but if fit and comfort are equal than am I better off spending the $35/$90 on better skates or putting it towards other gear or will the better skates be worth it in the long run?

(BTW, the Ovi does look like a good option but I just don't think I could handle the "flamboyance" hehe)
