2012 Hobey

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen a topic on this anywhere else.

Congratulations to Jack Connolly for winning the 2012 Hobey Baker award as the most outstanding player in men's college hockey. Dozens of articles this morning have noted Connolly's victory and almost to a one, they highlight the remarkable impromptu expression of gratitude that was his acceptance speech. I absolutely agree with those assessments, but believe that they overlook the most remarkable detail of the speech. Connolly's two fellow nominees have been drafted by NHL teams, but Connolly, himself, has not been drafted to date. Yet, Jack congratulated his rivals and wished them well in their professional careers.

Reflect on that: On what may well have been Jack's proudest moment, he highlighted the one fact that diminishes his athletic resume in order to comfort his final two college hockey rivals. Having watched Jack throughout his high school and college career, I can almost say that grace and class are so instinctual to him that he need not be given credit for displaying those character traits. But I can't resist. While winning the Hobey this year and the national championship last year, Jack led a team that did everything right. They followed his lead and there was no drama, no scandal. Just overachievement. Congratulations, again, Jack. Fare thee well. I have no doubt that you will continue to be a credit to your family, your community, your school, and your sport in whatever you do and wherever you go.
