Outside ankle bone pain (lateral malleolus)

Recommended Posts

I'm skating in a pair of RBK 7K skates, which I've had since '06. For a few years I barely touched the skates, and otherwise used them once a week or so. I've started playing 2x a week in the past few months. Over the past few sessions, I've started to feel a lot of pain on the outside ankle bone.

Upon inspection of the skate, I noticed that the ankle padding area seems worn down. I've tried using bunga pads and small gel stickers, but neither helped, as they seemed to only *add* to the pressure in that area. Given that these are old skates, I also just bought a new pair of Rbk skates with the pump feature, but I still feel the same pain on the outside ankle, especially when I lean in to do any edgework.

Anyone else have this problem or have suggestions? Can I get the boot punched out in this spot? Good thing is that I'll be off the ice for the next coule weeks. The problem with the new skates might be due to lingering soreness, so hopefully that goes away.

Consider the possibility that the ankle shape just isn't for you? The Pumps push in from the sides to hold your foot in place as opposed to wrap or hug the way other more anatomically correct foam placements do. More prominent ankle bones would lead to the pressure concentrating on those points rather than on the rest of the ankle as a whole. This has always been the case for me trying on Reebok skates, and even unbaked CCM skates for example. On the flip side, Supremes and Eastons with more pronounced ankle padding fit very well as an example.
