Protective Equipment for PeeWee Player

Recommended Posts

I've searched the site but still have a couple of questions. I hope some of you can help. I have a 12 year old going into second year peewee playing at an elite level. Most play is "non-contact" but practices are full contact and he general attends a couple of full contact tournaments a year. Size wise he is small (80 lb), plays center and is physical for his size (and generally targeted quite a bit).

For shoulder pads, what are the tradeoffs between protection and mobility? His current pads are top of the line warrior (don't have them with me to see exactly the model) purchased with the aim of erring on the side of protection. Right now we're looking at either nxg or vapor pads. If you have experience with both, do the nxg's hamper mobility? Are the vapor pads less protective?

Same question for pants. His current pants (now about two inches too short) have a lot of spine protection and give him a funny, humped back look on the ice. I'm not sure if they ever really fit him due to how skinny he is. So, now he is just as skinny but needs longer pants. This has to be a common problem in kids this age, right? I've heard that vapor might be more fitted for longer sizes? Other suggestions?

Basically, we'd like him to be able to move freely without raising his risk of injury.

Any help would be appreciated.
