Question about shoulder pad fit (CCM CL)

I got the CCM CL (large) shoulder pads, but unfortunately there are no local shops to try on a decent selection of gear.

I have some concerns they may be too big. Length wise they seem fine. No problems there. But they feel like they may be too loose in the chest/body area. How snug should they be? Currently, with the Velcro straps attached all the way (cant go any further), it's not a very snug feel. If I pull out at the bottom, away from my body, I can pull it out an inch or two.

My concern though is that if I try to exchange for a Medium, the medium may be more snug but it also may be shorter/offer less protection. Is there any other way to tighten the Velcro straps? Or are the CL shoulder pads normally a bit loose?

I'm 6'2" 230. I tried on L and XL. I could have definitely fit in the L but went with XL. Definitely feels a little loose around the midsection (and im a stocky dude). Im thinking that's part of the fit tho. As a shoulder pad they feel more "drapey" and less anatomic. Either way i really enjoy them. Tried my sherwood 5030s at pickup recently and the CLs actually feel lighter and more mobile after using them for a while.

I like them other than the lack of snugness ; I'll probably just sew the straps a little shorter to tighten em up a bit.

Be careful, upper chest might bow out if its cinched too tight.

True, I'll play with it a bit to see if that's the case. I'm worried that if I go one size lower (medium) they'll be too short though.

Older model CCMs. CCM Fit 09 (blue) and then CCM Fit Pro (red).
