How do I succeed in my situation?

Recommended Posts

I was thirteen when I started playing hockey as a goalie, but I wanted to my whole life. Now, I am 17, going into my 4th season.
Let me give you a rundown of my training (bear with me)
2 years ago I started hockey, as a goalie. To my unusual luck, a team that was bad defensively needed a goalie, since their starter left for the high school where I play now. I became the single goalie, who faced 39 shots a game and 60-70 shots in practices. This became a unique opportunity for me to improve ALOT, being put in every single game out of the roughly 38 we played.
2 summers ago I trained about 6 weeks in free player camps as a goalie, Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. I would go to these camps AGAIN the next summer.
Last summer I trained 7 out of the 8 weeks. I trained 6-7 times a week, for 7 weeks, with free player camps (for me, because I am a goalie), and 1 hour with my goalie coach each Monday evening. The player camps were from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. 4 hours of ice time (about), and 1 hour off ice. Monday through Friday, for six weeks. The seventh week I went to an actual goalie camp (unlike the last summer)from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, about 2 hours of ice time, for 4 days and the fifth day 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. That same winter I saw results. The starting goalie on my high school Varsity team, playing for 6 years, was having competition from somebody with then 3 years of hockey. My goalie coach, however informed me that my dreams on playing NCAA D3 hockey were over. No chance. I was devastated: all my work went to utter waste! He said if I'm lucky I could play D3 club hockey. I will work the same 7 out of 8 weeks, same deal as last summer. EXCEPT, on my 6th week i maybe am going, instead of a free player camp, to a SECOND goalie camp, in Massachusetts, called the Tim Thomas goalie camp (he is my hero, by the way). No I am not a Bruins fan. Anyways, 2 goalie camps, one 5 days, the Tim Thomas, 4 days.
Ive been told too much that I am too small, my style is too unorthodox, I am not athletic enough, I started too late. I am a 200% believer in putting in hard work, and an insane amount of time into this. I don't just want to prove people wrong, I want to prove myself right. How much commitment am I willing to put in? I live on New Jersey. I am willing to travel, and pay myself all the expenses of the Tim Thomas camp (my parent will be paying the other camp).I've started to work out at the gym daily. I use time in the summer for relaxation (like the starting goalie does), to work out 7 of the 8 weeks. I am willing to do anything and everything to make and exceed the expectations of ECHL, or D3 NCAA hockey. Or at least, make D1 club hockey. Thank you.
