coloring my holder

i just bought a pair of zairs and i want to dye the holder black. i can't afford to buy new holders. What would happen if i took a sharpie permanent marker and just colored the whole thing black. would the dye in the marker eat away at the holder and make it weaker? (somebody said it does this to helmets and gaolie masks that's why the csa will void the warrenty if u put stickers/paint/sharpie it).
