  1. You're already spending your money on custom skates, getting someone to help you who's done it more than once or twice is always a bonus if you're near a fit center.

Being fitted at a fit center doesn't cost you any more than doing the tracings yourself, and they can help identify issues, options or other anything else you may have missed on your own.

  2. Does the metatarsal guard make the whole tongue thicker, or just a narrow area in the middle?

It doesn't make it thicker on the portion of tongue that touches your foot. Just a ~1/8" thick piece of material down the centre-middle of the upper half of the outside of the tongue. It's the area on the tongue that appears silver in some pictures (or raised black in some of my pictures) down to the area where the velcro starts. I can post a pic of it later tonight or tomorrow.

It will stiffen up the tongue as well as adding some protection.

Non VH skate, but similar question: my tongue shifts to the outside because my medial malleolus ("ankle bone") sits farther forward than my lateral malleolus and my tongue torques to sit between them.

I had some irritation between the edge of my tongue and my medial malleolus last season that only went away with not skating all summer.

Should I force my tongue to the centerline of the boot so the edge of the tongue completely laps my "ankle bone"?

It's definitely a consideration to look into. Typically that irritation is caused by the friction of the tongue moving and shifting when you're skating (or tongue breakdown from this reason). Preventing this will usually stop the friction and irritation. You could also look into a product like Stable26 or Ezeefit Booties to add some volume into the area where you have reduced volume. This may help prevent the tongue from wandering as much, or stop the area from becoming so irritated.

  3. Ref laserrobottime

I enquired about replacing my original tongue.

If you have any degree of over-pronation with or without a certain shape to your foot (thicker on medial side, slimmer on lateral side), the tongue can torque to the outside like that.

If all else feels good on your tongue (maybe aside from the pressure you're having at the top of the boot), I'd suggest trying to tether or have a strap sewn into your original tongue that will help it stay centered (you can run your laces through it in a few places). Or, have someone double check your alignment if anyone in your area is capable of that.

You may also need a bit of a thicker tongue to accommodate your foot shape and skating style. In that case getting a new, thicker tongue is probably your best bet. Tough to say for sure without seeing it in person.

  4. Bauer doesn't have exclusivity with the women's team though. Even in Bauer-sponsored leagues (CWHL, BCHL), skates aren't a part of the deal. Players can get a discount when buying Bauer skates but they can choose to wear another brand (and not have to black out the logo) if they want to.

    jubo.jpg

But, Haley may be an ambassador for women's/girl's hockey through Bauer. So it may not be a team thing or league thing, but rather a personal deal as an ambassador.

  5. Lets say you're a pro athlete and someone is sponsoring you or your team (let's say Bauer or CCM) and you have to wear their gear.

Let's also say that you love their protective, but that their skates aren't your cup of tea for fit or comfort reasons.

Perhaps you could wear another brand of skates as long as an effort was given to make them look like the product you're sponsored to wear, and as long as you don't actively endorse the other product...

May be completely off-base, or may be something to think about.

  6. Ok gents. The official word from VH...

The enhanced metatarsal guard CAN be embroidered. Up to 3 digits (numbers or letters) - just like the tongue without metatarsal guard.

I posted a pic of the embroidered metatarsal guard a page or so back. The skates with the "GB" and "MB" embroidery - with a black metatarsal guard.

The enhanced metatarsal guard covers up the VH logo on the tongue, as does the embroidery option.

Hope that helps clear stuff up.

  7. I have the SOLE Thin Sport footbeds which I actually haven't tried much on ice, but while standing on them feel really comfortable.

Do you recommend I put them in my skates on the first baking, or use the footbeds they provide? I think I may stick with their footbeds since its already traced on my foot. I feel like if I put a footbed in that gives me more arch support, wouldn't it alter how my foot sits in the boot and decrease some of the customization? May be a dumb question. I'm really looking just to add shims to decrease my pronation.

I'd recommend trying them with the VH footbeds first. They are quite nice. The SOLE may take up too much volume and change how your foot sits in the boot. If you feel like you need a bit more material under your arch you can add a bit more of the material under the VH insole, or try something like the SOLE insole. I'd also recommend re-baking them if you change insoles.

  8. I definitely like the look. Just some loose stitching and glue which isn't THAT big of a deal.

I think with the JR sizing now in place though they should improve the presentation. Put it in a bag and "buff" it out for the kiddies.

@Optimus, that's the first thing I noticed when I put the skate on without it being baked even. Amazing.

Do you guys think it defeats the purpose to put in a SOLE footbed in the skates?

I had SOLE super-slim in mine for a while to give my arch a bit more support. I ended up not liking the skating feel and went to a Black Superfeet where I get less heel lift, less arch support, but better foot feel.

  9. That's how they ship all pairs, even to authorized dealers. In boxes, with labels. They don't have VH bags as of yet, as far as I know. On the flip side, Bauer, CCM, etc don't put their custom skates in bags either. Graf "sometimes" does.

Re: epoxy - they are handmade, which leads to occasionally some epoxy remaining on the boot. Not sure what you mean about the material hanging off.

Glad you received your skates and that the initial feel seems positive!

  10. what is the big difference between senior and junior in vh? just sizing or?

With the new JR style boot using the new toe cap effective mid-late-september, the only difference is going to be the sizing and the area/shape in which color options are applied to the side of the boot. The junior boot has a much smaller and more trapezoidal shape where the color option is applied compared to the senior boot.

  11. Got a "not a problem" from Rob. Don't see why this wouldn't be an option considering it's practically on every retail boot you buy.

Rust-proofing, yes. I interpreted it as you were thinking like rubber or nylon coating of some kind. Interested to see what they provide.

Doesn't hurt to ask. I noticed there are about three types of boot designs:

    WoVsYOB.jpg

    kaROc93.jpg

    HWfyQIM.jpg

    First boot - older style.

Second boot - a bit of evolution, but still with the old tendon guard, closer in finish to the new JR side finishing style, but still with older (coated) CF toe cap and side walls graphic near toe box.

Third boot - new style SR.

  12. Anyone know what shipping VH does to the states? How long it takes from shipment?

A little over two weeks and mine haven't shipped just eager to get on the ice.

I believe the current build time for customs is around the 3 week mark because of increased volume.

Optimus can probably comment on the US shipping. I think his arrived in a matter of days after they shipped. Quite fast.

  13. According to Rob, the enhanced tongue can't be embroidered.

    Are you sure?

I've ordered a few pairs with the enhanced metatarsal guard and embroidery combination and had no issues.

    11745310_388436908014093_139658212553089

The two pairs in the middle have the enhanced metatarsal guard and the embroidery.

The pair on the left has the enhanced metatarsal guard and no embroidery.

The pair on the right has neither.

(The skates pictured have the metatarsal guard in black - so it's a bit difficult to see in the pics)

  14. Ah, I missed that part about the shims moving on his old Supremes. I'm pretty sure heel lifts don't need to move like that. Maybe a different place could install them. But, yeah, in that case, I can see why you want to find a holder with the pitch built in. Cobras are another option, but they're not as popular.

Yeah, the shop who installed them likely used rivets that were too short, and with the added height of the shims, there wasn't enough to grab on, and the lifts/shims started moving. Typically, they don't move if installed properly.

  15. Funny you mention this, I was discussing this with one of my guys last night and we decided to do the same thing (like a consignment/rebate) for VH junior models where growth may be a major consideration.

I am offering an in-house rebate on old VH's when buying a new pair of VH's. (when purchased originally through the Toronto Fit Center's)It's a personal thing and has nothing to do with VH. However they applauded the idea as there is little wear on the smaller pairs. Of course for people that have large discrepancies in there feet it will be a little bit of an issue. Hopefully that wont be to many. So next spring I will have about 20 pairs of used VH JR skates for sale !!
