  1. I got a job via an agency, told to turn up 0700 Monday morning. I turn up 0635, no-one there knew I was coming. I get sent to the canteen, I sat until 0800, no one came to see me. So I got  up and left. The agency calls me, I tell them what happened, get told to go back. So, I go back out, around 0930. Yet again I'm left standing like a spare prick. Eventually around 1100 the boss comes to see me and shows me to my machine. I work the whole day until 1900, get told to come back on Tuesday. Show up on Tuesday, all is ok. This morning, the agency calls, how did i get on etc. "So you're in again on nightshift tonight". Er, no, no one told me. I haven't gotten a chance to get rest. Told them I couldn't do it, I needed more notice than a few hours. Am I being unreasonable?

    a1C is measured on a 1 - 10 scale.  Normal is 5.7 and below.  Prediabetic is 5-7 - 6.4.  Diabetic is 6.5 and up.

137 sounds like a regular blood glucose test.  A 37 would be too low to be honest.

I suggest you spend some more time talking to your endocrinologist and maybe taking a diabetes class if needed.  Med insurance will set you up with that.

    I am a type2 diabetic on meds.

I'm in Northern Ireland, we use a different scale to the USA. Those results are in mmol/mol. Our normal blood glucose tests are done in mmol/litre, and those numbers would translate to 20.6 and 6.2 roughly. I believe you multiply by 18 to get it in US units. I'm a type 1 on insulin.

You have no idea how much you can handle, until you have to do it. I've lost a lot of people in the last year or so, including my wife. It never gets easier and the thoughts of them never go away, they just hurt a little less as time goes by.

I'm so sorry for your losses Chadd. Thank you for your kind words, I hope you had a good Christmas.

  4. Last week an old school friend died. 31, by herself. Tuesday this week, I was repairing a punctured tyre at work when my mum rang to tell me my granny had just died. Then Thursday, after we had buried my granny, my friend Colin died. If life is trying to test my resolve, I'd really like it to stop.

Anyway, I hope you all have a merry Christmas. Hug your friends and family, tell them you love them. Be kind.

Nice! I was doing that for a time when I first finished high school and didn't yet know what I wanted to do with my life. It was a fun job, even if it was definitely not something I was all that interested in doing long term.

Funnily I did it for a few years when I left the army and was struggling. My boss always joked that i would be back, 10 years later here we are haha!

  6. So some of you may remember my post in the venting spot here.

Well I've managed to get myself a job fitting tyres and I start on Monday. It's not the best paying job in the world but it's work and it'll give me a bit of purpose which is exactly what I need.

Thanks to all you guys and girls who took the time to wish me well. You really helped me in my hour of need and if I can ever do the same for you, just give me a shout.

    Aaron.

I hope everything gets better soon!  It sounds like a real rough patch, but things seems to really be looking up!

Thanks, for the longest time it just seemed like it was one step forward and two steps back but I'm hoping this is things taking a turn for the better. I've been trying to get another job too, but all I know is law enforcement and custodial work

  8. So. Here goes. Back in March I was rushed to the ER (I'm Northern Irish, we usually call it casualty or Accident and Emergency) with sepsis. I spent 3 days in intensive care and a further 2 on a ward. I had a minor heart attack too whilst I was there. I don't recall much of it. I lost a lot of weight, dropping from 230lbs to 160 in the weeks after. My mental health took a battering too, to the point I attempted to overdose 3 times. I lost my job because I was unable to work, developed scar tissue in my left lung where the infection had been, and I ended up on welfare. No matter what I tried I could not gain weight and was pounding back pints of water every day. I tried to get back to hockey but my gear was hanging on me like a badly dressed mannequin and my energy levels were at an all time low. I couldn't complete a training session and games were out of the question. I developed thrush and it was only then that my doctor asked had I been tested for diabetes. I hadn't so I went in the next morning and did a fasting blood test. That was a Thursday, and the following Monday my doctor called me and told me to get to the ER because I needed insulin ASAP. It transpires that the sepsis has basically killed my pancreas and left me as an insulin dependent diabetic. I'm currently undergoing tests on my thyroid at the minute to determine if it works properly too. My mental health is returning and I've gained weight too, although I've been very conscious of my diet ever since I was diagnosed diabetic. I've an appointment with a therapist this Friday, and my doctor has put my meds on weekly dispense to keep the temptation of overdosing away. I'm in the process of trying to get my visa so I can emigrate to Canada too. I'm also returning to training with my team next week, they asked why I hadn't been up in a while and when I explained the situation they said theu would waive my fees until I got back on my feet financially.
