I wonder what True /VH is charging for the scanning tool (iPad) with software? I heard what Bauer was charging for their new fit tool and just about fell over.

iPads are relatively cheap.  I think the camera itself runs for ~300-400 USD with the 3DSizeMe software being included and/or free on the App store.  Scans are sent as a pre-packaged file to via e-mail to an e-mail address (in this case True/VH's skate sale order department).

Quick question...so I've basically decided on ordering a pair of VH skates after reading through this forum and others. I have very flat feet that are at their widest around the ankle bone och over my (non existing) arch. Due to this I have always had a problem with skates fitting badly with severe pain as a consequence. I am currently in a pair of CCM Tacks skates in a EE last which fit well and the pain and discomfort is minimal, but the prospect of a completely pain free skate very convincing.

So on to my question. What holders should I go for. As I am currently in CCMs i am using the SB +4.0 and I don't have any real complaints (except loosing one of the blade screws). I can't really remember if they feel any different than the TUUK LS2 i had on my previous skates (most likely I was in too much pain to notice the feel of the holders). When I started skating in my CCMs I felt that there was a little to much forward pitch but my LHS reprofiled the blades to remedy this. However, the Tacks has a pretty aggressive stance in the skate itself so this may have been the reason I felt like I was pitched forward.

Therefore I am confused as to what holder to chose: LS2 LS Edge or Step. Does anybody have any input/experience between the various holders.

Any help appreciated, really want to get an order in this season.

I've found a lot of customers seem to prefer the feel of the CCM SB 4.0 and VH-Step holders, citing the holders feel stiffer and seem to transfer energy transfer.

I will admit that the CCM 4.0 holders, being one of the few modern-height/pitch holders available to us that can take aftermarket steel, has a serious advantage for customisability.

If you don't swap steel frequently, like the pitch of Edge/4.0 holders, and want Step or BlackEdge steel, this would be the route to go.

Unfortunately one LHS in Vancouver has informed me they won't order it in for fear of upsetting Bauer.

The other reason is that Nash Sports, one of the main distributors of Step Steel in Canada (definitely the main distributor for Lower Mainland area) has been advised legally not to sell it.  A few of the shops around here are also regularly visited by Bauer/industry reps, so it's a bit touchy.

Just got fitted for a pair on Saturday (October 1st). Many thanks to Jeremy and Chad at The Hockey Shop for helping out! Can't recommend them enough for anybody in the Pacific North West looking to get into a pair of VH.

Had tracings, soft tape measurements, photo's and the iPad scan done (very, very cool). Was quite an impressive, thorough, and professional process.

     - Enhanced Impact Protection

    - Metatarsal Guard

    - LS Edge w/ LS3

Will update when they arrive & provide my thoughts.

Glad you enjoyed the fit process. :)  I've actually just e-mailed you your update.  See you in soon!

Awesome, thanks for everything guys. To say the least, I appreciate all the excellent feedback here. I visited my not-so-local hockey shop (it was an hour and a half away), got properly fitted, found out my skates were a size and a half too big, and tried on a few pairs. Ended up going with Bauer Supreme S170s that were very comfortable with the stock insoles in there. I went ahead and bought superfeet yellows as my fitter highly suggested for my foot type. Again, thank you very much for all of your help.

I've had that problem too.  My first ever pair of skates were 1.5 sizes over and holy hell my feet hurt.

Maybe Bauer Speed Plates? Much more economical than custom orthotics. Might be a good place to start

From past experience with customers, the Speed Plates aren't spectacular with those with flat feet.  Furthermore, the tech in them isn't all too spectacular in themselves.  If the custom route is where he'd want to go, the best option at the same price point would be the Graf Conformables.

From what I've heard (and my own personal experience), Superfeet isn't a viable option for a lot of people with flat feet. I would look into a custom orthotic first and then try and fit a pair of skates, not vice versa.

I have custom orthotics for my work boots, but because I am in the Navy and dealing with government health care, it takes quite a bit of time to get my hands on more. I appreciate all of your help.

I myself have flat feet - even worse, a flexible arch that moves between low arch and flat feet depending on stance.  Mako skates did wonders for me, and I currently use low-arch Superfeet Black and Superfeet Carbon insoles.  I would recommend checking out the Mako skates if you can find them in stock in your size.

I've also known some teammates with flat feet to use Superfeet Yellow insoles, as well as the Graf SIDAS custom insoles.  Beyond that, it's VH skates, as mentioned above.

I'll repeat myself: Get your foot shape and volume fit sorted out first, and then address each problem by modifying the skate to your liking.  Lace your skates snug/loose in the forefoot to midfoot area - you don't want to compress and already flat arch, then crank them at the top for lateral support, as a skate that fully supports your foot can reduce any other issues caused from a shifting or collapsing foot.

By the way, I've since moved the lace locks to the 2nd eyelet from the top. I found the 4th eyelet to offer great heel lock, but did not maintain tightness at the top (which is why I added them in the first place).

I just ordered another set of lace locks and Oakley visor spacer screws, and plan on putting some on the 4th eyelet again.

Keep 'em at 4th, loop lock at top 2.

You want to shim the VH skates for forward pitch??? there is no need to do it. there plenty forward enough. EVERY person i have fitted Pro's included went neutral no lifts at all. One tried a slight forward pitch and took it out after. High profile player.

Interesting.  I actually have mine shimmed 1/8 inch in the back heel for more forward pitch.  I came from Makos and went with a Tuuk holder for convenience.  1/8 inch heel lift built into boot, +1 forward pitch on the skate runner.

Supposedly if your center of gravity is directly over your blades then you could be over pronated or Supinated and you should still not need to shim your skates.

That's why I am saying we are shimming our skates to get us to that COG point. The more we play with inside medial heel shims or outside lateral shims it gets our center of gravity close to that sweet spot!.

VH tells me that they have had very very few problems with the remote fitting (unless they have not been told), but they have hardly had any involvement with issues out of 4000 pairs of skates!

I need more feed back people as I hope to order next week and I am having the older LS2 holder (LHS indicated a better holder) installed with the ability to put step steel in or the the other more expensive Black Steel. I also want two heel shims to compensate for the low pitch on the Bauer and I may ask for an added 2-3 mm heel lifts to get that forward feeling.

VH has been very accommodating to me!

Are there any light players out there?

I want to add their protection package but I am only 130 lbs and 5'5' tall? Will this be too strong for me, as well I will be ordering the suggested second tongue.

    Alan

I'm 140 lb at 5' 8".  I've got their protection package and it isn't an issue.  That said, the standard boot is solid enough that my girlfriend at 100 lbs, 5' 2" can skate in them no problem without any durability/protection issues.
