  1. Scott ,  what's happening slow but sure is you are getting what we call hockey legs ....  The getting up from the one knee on the ice one blade on the ice : don't forget you can use the  muscle on the knee down leg by pushing your toe cap into the ice to assist the quads on the blade on the ice leg .

Grab the dinning room chairs or kitchen chairs and use the to assist you doing squats.  Do ten or twenty twice a day . Use your arms as much as you have to . Two months you won't need the chairs .

  2. Hi all , I reached out to Botas to buy a pair of there skates after seeing them in pics on line . The sizing was very simple;  stand on paper trace your feet then measure the two longest points . You take that number and go to the sizing table and pick your size.. The boot runs wide . The skates can be ordered with no blades so the holder of your preference can be installed. My skates I have the Botas blade holder with there best steel . They arived , opened the box and each skate was wrapped in paper , the boot had a introductory manual and a warrnty  card , i examined the stitching, the centering of the blades then i put the laces in and noticed the laces felt more substantial then many factory laces.  The blades were sharpened . The blade holder looks identical to the tuuk custom but higher in the heel .  Putting the skates on you have to work to get the heel home in the pocket. There is lots of ankle padding. The heel seated and the skates laced and tightened the foot is wrapped nicely.  I then set the sharpener up and put a 5/8" hallow.

The next day I go to a public skating session put them on and go on the ice . With in 3-4 strides I felt home on the skates.  I am so happy with them .  What I didn't do is pick up the insoles to see if there is access to the runner fastener to see if the steels can be replaced with out removing the holder  . I'm very impressed with the skates .

  3.  What kind of skater are you as far as leg bend or form ? How tall are you?  .  I will tell you up front I am not current on the curve patterns.  My self I like a blade that has a that's more at the toe and gradual back.   I played with a lie 5 I believe that would enable me to have room to stick handle and evade without feeling bound up . I also used a stick that was just about at the height of the where the neck goes to the sternum.  I did modify my stick blade by twisting it .  I don't know if the composite sticks can be heated and tweaked.  Maybe some of this will give you ideas or experiment.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been screamed at for not being all over that point guy. Even had a center start charging out to him off draws cuz I wasn’t getting there fast enough. Of course he had no problem leaving his man down low to bang in rebounds.

I see how far off the wings play the points in the NHL. Looks like they are more concerned with the break out than trying to block point shots.

They are giving them selves room to receive a pass .  It also can make the d chomping at the bit get drawn in and caught up (not likely in nhl)  . Other wing heads up ice ,center should have read this and be dam near the blue line.  Wing hit the other wing with pass as he is in motion,  then he hits the center now moving on a diagonal  ,then weave off the back of the center. Puck is now almost in the  o zone.  The wing that started the play is digging up the back.  Center fakes a shot drops to the wing who should have a clean shot top right.  Center is going that post for a rebound or recontrol the puck on a wide shot . The other wing is driving hard for the rebound  . If the play goes to hell the center is looping to center  either with the puck that went wide or without and it coughed out to the point.    Lots of sweeping movement crisp passes are hard to defend.

The set up for this all started with the wing creating room in the d zone.

If another another player is fast enough to take off from his position and cover your man and beats you to the man ; he was right you couldn't get to him . In this case roll off formation and take his man that is probably closer to you or give him a fail safe .       Cover  for your team mates always

    + about a million.

We get too caught up with "systems"....and calling things like basic defensive zone coverage "systems"....and putting forth useless euphemisms such as "system hockey is winning hockey".  It's all a bunch of festering male bovine excrement - particularly in a beer league environment.

Honestly, if you don't have the time or resources to create AND EXECUTE a series of structured, progressive, scenario-based practice plans to teach a "system", then you're better off stressing general concepts.  Hopefully OP has some more experienced guys around that can first get on the same page with each other and THEN show the team things like, "hey, wings, when your side defenseman drops into the play, drop with him, but don't stray too far into the middle or we'll never be able to break the puck out."

Like the way you worded that.     One of things that's great about hockey is no situation is ever identical  . I running a blank here on the exact term been so long since used .   At around squirt level I remember coaches breaking both ends into  grids .  Using this and basics like don't turn your back to the puck. Stay moving  . This seemed help getting folks close to the place to be ..... it would be nice if beer league teams had a practice . A grid can be made with a chalk line a carpenter would use.

I agree with you, those who don't have LHS's nearby have a dillema. When I was in the military and stationed at god-forsaken places that had no LHS's, I had to rely on advice given by phone from a trusted LHS in another part of the country. We didn't have online and ebay stores. However for every one person like you who doesn't have a LHS nearby and is using the board for true need, there are 20 who are on these boards just to save a buck, no other reason. You don't have to believe me, on this board alone you will find many posts from folks, who admit scamming their LHS, trying stuff on and then buying from ebay or online. Perfect example is the post above. Until you've been scammed, you really don't know how it feels.

Well the lhs is a business that we all need as hockey players.  To keep the business open helps all the players in a specific area  .  Yeah you may pay a little more on something.  But that service will be available to you come time for cutting a profile and sharpening.  The two lhs that were around  when I was coming up threw youth to eventually pro ; were instrumental in my career.   I worked on cars starting at 10 to pay for most of hockey.  They spoke well of me to local college coaches power skating and conditioning coaches  . These guys got me the opportunity.  One shop was owned by an ex Boston bruin  .  At twelve I went threw four pair of skates  needing my fith from growing.  Gives me super tacks .  I know it' not always like that  .   We need guys like that around.   We gotta keep the lhs open.      I thinking about a mobile hockey shop . Sell choice brands. Give red carpet service.        How do you think that would be received?

  7. I'm basing this off just being able to read you are talking about defense zone losing situation control and break out opportunities.  .... got a couple questions  : can your team afford extra ice time to practice  ? .Have the more experienced folks appose the less experienced; ALL in controlled walk threw pace . The more seasoned players are actually explaining how to defend them ..... Is there chalk talks happening?         Also  the center is he or she a stand then react player or a constant on the move?    Who is covering the hash marks to the corners ?   I have seen many times with beginning players or over anxious getting pulled into the corner you got two players there that leaves two passing options,  coughing it back to the other d behind the net or the center reading it and giving a pass option to being at the top of the circle.  The other wing digging and getting in a affective position  . The d that was covering  the net area hopefully read  the movement and is also digging  . Possible three on two   .

But the typical with inexperienced players is you get three players from the hash to the corner probably pulled in by one opposing player maybe two . That gives you one d and one wing to cover three men .  Alot is on the free wing . If he or she is flat footed its going to be a cluster.  If a rover Great chance of grabbing a pass or preventing a scoring opportunity.   Try showing your team these situations.

  8. Hey all,  Is there any opinion on these blade holders and steels   . I got a set coming that were on sale $10 per side  to put on a pair of Daoust 301 New old stock that someone scarfed the clear tuuks from  and installed icm blades on . They put the holders on crooked .

Yep, exactly.  If I had a real quality sharpener nearby, I wouldn't need a Sparx.  I don't.  There's not one guy that can maintain a profile, and even if there was there would be no guarantee that he'd be working when I need them cut.  No joke, that profile would be gone in two sharpenings, max.

Learn and be the guy in the area .

    Can that happen so easily?

I have a good sharpener just down the street but all I can check at home is edge evenness. How would a person even know how much his profile has changed?

Something about profile that I want to mention.     When a profile is cut on a blade the profile is cut on the skating surface.  After a profile is cut it actually leaves a high toe and heel . The technician has to go back and free hand blend the toe and the heel .

I have seen guys ruin a profile from one sharpening.  You don't want those people to touch your skates.  A good technician will approach the wheel go in the direction of rotation and slide the skate over the wheel in a straight plain .finger tips on the holder.   If you go to the same place, same tech  the profile shouldn't be changed much or at all.

This being said the spark being consistent your profile should be accurate on the skating area of the blade  .

Can anyone suggest a good car power inverter so I can bring my Sparx to games and sharpen my teammates skates for a couple bucks? :26_nerd: I'm not sure what wattage is required - I'll have to look that up.

Look at the power draw of the machine.  It will give you the watts and amps the machine draws and requires.  An inverter is a really handy thing to have . I would get 2000 watt .  I just got a tool and equipment cat with stuff on sale  company is Eastwood   .They have a pure sign wave inverter  $129.99  item # 31464.      eastwood.com

What's that? Never heard of it. Every machine i have brought there was made for 220.

Incredible edger  I think (?) Is a machine that uses a small od wheel . And the skate holder slides on machined round bar in two directions  it has an ultra smooth feel . I believe it was first designed for figure skates  . Small wheel to get close and under the toe pick  . Incredible lil edger if you want to Google it .

Preordered a Sparx the other week and my card was charged already, is that a good sign? Their site still says "3-4 week backorder".

Some factories offer drop shipping after doing  X amount of business.  It keeps the cost down for everyone  . This could be the case . I bet it comes faster.

Can the skate be put in the machine?   When I have seen video of the machine the toe was facing left from the vantage point of the window

Did you figure out how you wanted to install them? Adjusting the tongue all the way up so it doesn't go into the toe box and then having the velcro tab covered by the power foot?  That's what I think I'd do if I were to use it. Don't really wanna have up the power foot.

But for now having the tongue into the toe box has decreased enough room in the toe box for me to be happy with it.

Curl like you are trying to grip the insoles?    That is what I liked in a fit . Just a little curle  . I can't feel the front 2/3 of my feet now .  Back when I could I wanted that slite toe bend and that skin to skin of being bare foot .

The heel liner pulled down the first time I put them on. So they said to send them back and they will measure compared to my scan and repair the liner. Their website says if they try everything and you still aren’t happy they will remake one time. So we will see.

I was on eBay the other day looking for blade holders.  I stumbled on a few VH skates for sale  . The common thing on them all was the liner was peaked down in the boot.  It looks like it is tearing at the seam .

Yes, its the space above the toes. If there is space there the toes and the forefoot can lift, this lift can result in loss of energy. Whilst I'm not going to comment on the energy side, I will say it works to help secure the foot into the boot. As I skate without laces, my Bauer skates are loose on my foot in the forefoot area, with powerfoot inserts fitted I get a really good lock in the forefoot.

I see. . When I played this stuff wasn't on the table.  My guess is I probably cut down movement by Waring my skates small  .   Second nature then never thought about it . Makes sense.

I used to use Powerfoot inserts on my stock Bauer skates, as I found the empty space in the toe caps disconcerting especially when doing edge drills. However, since then my skating has improved markedly, especially my edge control, and I find that I no longer need them, and I do not notice the empty space in the toe caps. It is possible that more advanced skaters than me would get some benefit, my skating is nowhere near the level of the coaches who teach us.

I'm trying to understand how the space above the toes is affecting skating?  Do I have this right that it' the space above your toes?

Check that total.  Just talked with Canon Factory Service, after opening her up for the repair, more damaged to the lens than they originally thought.  New estimate will put me around $850 total.  I authorize the payment and fix, but at this point I really wonder if I should have just paid another $450 and bought a new lens.

After a phone conversation and being assured it’d come back like new, I went that direction.

    Not a great day.

Wow man . Had no idea these things cost this much
