Didn't I hear somewhere that the team Datsyuk was to play for was owned by his rich buddy or something? Then when another team matched the contract, he decided to come back to North America?

I swear I heard this somewhere, but I don't know where.

Correct, his former team had the right to match any contract he was offered, and they chose to do so. That's when he decided to come back to Detroit.
