Recommended Posts

first off i would like to say what an amazing game, lots of energy, lots of fun, just a great game to go watch and have fun at. I was jsut reading a post a few minutes saying the caps got 7k people to thier game which is rediculous, now in case you didnt know, the corel centre hold 18500 people, last night they set a franchise record with 19311 people, this is the 1st gmae in ottawa in 2 years and they set a new record, they didnt even do this for the game 7 against the devils in the eastrn conference finals 3 years ago. all i can say is hockey is back and every1 is excited here in ottawa, should be a great season

A big crowd is no surprise in Canada. Copps (Cap: 17,000 and change) had over 16,000 for Bruins Leafs last week. ACC had a big crowd Thursday, Centre Bell had a huge crowd for Leafs-Habs Sat. Calgary and Edmonton have dne wellfrom what I've heard.

It's the US where Hockey is 3rd or 4th behind highscool football, Poker, Bowling and watching paint dry that crowds will be a problem.

Look at the attendance figures over the last few years and it's not that bad in the US. The problem is the TV ratings. The funny part about that is I don't know a single hockey fan with a ratings box on his TV. In fact, I don't know a single person anywhere in the country who actually has one. I've filled out a paper TV diary once in my life, I filled out a bunch of radio diaries when I was still on the air and man did my ratings go up that year. ;)

The league wants TV ratings, so they can get more for the rights...but wouldn't the individual teams rather have a full house every night. That is more money in their pockets than half full buildings and everyone watching at home, then waiting for the money to be split up around the league.

Isn't it?

BTW...We get e-mails every now and then asking about BBM (re: Arbitron) books. "How do I fill this out...I listen to you all the time" The PD doesn't even answer them just in case it's the competition trying to catch him tampering. I've never gotten one personally, but my GF had a TV diary last year.

I believe their theory is that increasing viewership will also increase attendance over the long term. More casual fans attending a game or two a year, results in more sellouts.

After I quit I ended up with a stack of logs. I must have filled out 50+ for the non-profit religious station. They had better ratings than a couple of commercial stations.
