Brian's "Beast 2" pads....

Recommended Posts

Scarey is right. I didn't mean to imply that all leagues outlawed 12" pads. I know that there will be a trickle down effect. From what I hear NCAA will implement the 11" pad sizing next year...but thats just kinda a rumor floating around the University of Maine goalie room.

Currently all the retail pads are still 12". The 11" pads all have to be hand cut (or at least had to until very recently) because the manufacturers don't (or didn't) have dies for cutting the materials yet.

Sherwood was really the only company ready for the 12" to 11" changeover because they had already been producing an 11" pad and marketing it as a womens model.

Actually I believe that is untrue...but some companies might have had that problem. All of the pad companies that offer intermediate pads are able to make the switch over really easily. I know for a fact that Brian's and Vaughn both allow us to order 11" wide pads on any order for no additional charge.

Actually.... I believe it IS true.

According to Don Wickens who is one of the major shareholder in the "New" Brian's Company... "Every single piece of NHL equipment is now completely cut by hand". As reported in an interview by Fred Groves in the October 29, 2005 issue of Hockey Now.

Why you might ask? Simple, Brian's doesn't have dies for 11" pads yet. Or at least didn't as of October 29th.... All of the retail pads and all of the OHL, AHL, minor hockey and European market pads are still 12" (unless custom ordered and "hand cut") and will be for at least one more season. Since this is still experimental in the NHL it may not be of benefit for equipment suppliers to invest in new 11" dies at this time.

You can read the entire article here...

Hockey Now : Goalies gear gets taken to the cleaners (article)

So you see, even though you "know for a fact" that Brian's and others might not charge extra for specially ordered 11" width pads, it does not indicate that my statement about the materials having to be hand cut was "untrue". <_<

All the good companies do it by hand... Take Vaughn for example

Actually,

ALL of the big companies do it by dies. It eliminates the possibility of human error thereby reducing the amount of scrap material. Also, hand cutting is very time consuming compared to die cutting.

Only the most complex patterns or "customs" are cut by hand.

You should take the web site tour sometime it is very educational. :)
