Try Players Bench. Pretty good shop.

Players Bench Denver

4401 South Tamarac Parkway, Unit 104

Denver, CO 80237

(303) 221-7515

For playing there, it all depends on where you live. You could go for Littleton, DU, even Superior (30 min from Denver area) or SMIC (Sun Micrpsystems Ice Centre. It has 3 nice sheets of ice and a little shop that has great sticks, not great on protective. I'm not actually from Denver, but Boulder, which is 45 minutes away.

Just played at the SMIC out in denver for 2 tourneys. The pro shop theres pretty nice. A lot of sticks and some gloves/skates and stuff. Theres a hockey shop about 5 min. away from that rink but I cant remeber what its called. They had a lot of stuff.

twiztidwrista- That proshop that you said was 5 min away was a Players Bench.

And the one at SMIC is where I get all of my sticks now.

Golfpuck-BVICE is your best bet. Its in Superior which is right inbetween Boulder and Louisville. Its my home rink.

It is $8 for a stick n puck and $8 for drop in. I think that the prices are being raised to $10 though.

Don't forget about Foothills! Even though it is about 20 mins from me, you still gotta love the "working mans rink". I have found that DU on Sunday nights are usually the highest level here in denver as far as drop ins go.

Oh yeah for shops I forgot to add Proskate. Pretty good shop for sharpenings, jerseys and socks and tape, but not for equipment imo. Never seem to have what I am looking for in stock and they are usually very pricey if they do. They do a great job with skates though. With a purchase of skates you get 10 free sharpenings, free blade alignment and heat fit, which probably is pretty standard, but alot better than Players Bench.

If you move to the Louisville/Boulder/North Denver area, you'd probably have better luck playing in the Sun leagues. I don't know whether they dropped off slightly during the lockout, but they had close to 100 teams over 10-12 divisions prior.

I've never played there, since there's no highway from my house (Evergreen), but guys on my team would play in both leagues (Sun and Rocky Mountain Hockey League). It sounded like the Sun league was about $25 less than the RMHL, which currently is $440 for winter league ($15 less for people who live in a certain district) and $275 for the summer league.

There might be two rinks closer to where you end up, but I don't know whether they have leagues; in any event, they wouldn't have anywhere near the smoothness of talent between the leagues.

In terms of stores, the Shop at the Promenade, Players Bench and Pro Skate are all good stores in the northern part of the city.

You ever skate at Foothills during the mornings?

I don't. I play in the RMHL and have night games there during the week. How are the skates in the morning? Do you go to drop-ins any where else?

If you move to louisville/boulder/north denver,etc...There are are 3 local rinks. The Ice centre/promenade in westminister

http://www.icecentre.com/

-the apex center in arvada (north west)

http://www.northjeffco.org/activities/ice/default.asp

-and boulder valley ice in superior.

http://www.bvice.com/

The rink in superior is the closest to boulder and is for the most part the same town as louisville (just the other side of the off ramp). It is on the corner of McCaslin and U.S.-36.Bv ice does have a league (2 div) and pick up hockey every day of the week.

As mentioned the ice centre/sun ice/ promenade has (claimed)the largest in house league in the country. It is good and was once better, under old management. The talent pool is much better there w/leagues ranging from low d,3 b div's, and the A league,as well as over 40 comp and rec.The down fall of this league is they use an in house ref system and they tend to have a problem w/players and a chip on their shoulders (not all but many) and a poor director. When you get in the B leagues they become a bit washed out.B-1 is fairly good but the B-2 or below tends to have some good players and then a bunch of hacks who have little exp. and like to whack you w/ their sticks.Sorry if I sound biased but I was kicked out of the league last season for Jumping off the bench and removing a ref from my brothers throat.(seriously) All in all though it is a good competitive league there. They have no pick up hockey

The apex does have pick up hockey but no leagues.

As for shops there are a few around.Players bench, pro skate, and the pro shop at the ice centre. If you just need a sharpening go to either the ice centre or the superior rink. The other 2 places have messed up my skates too many times ,either over sharpened, left a gouge, misses a rolled edge,or something, almost every time.

Ps.-The ice cetre has winter and summer leagues. Each new season the price has been going up.Last time round I think the winter was about $455 and the sumer around $225.

the bv ice (superior) I'm not sure what the winter $ is but the have a 10 game single elim. spring and summer league there I believ is 180 if you sign up early. They also run a membership prgm there which reduces the cost as well. They are a Non-profit rink that supports the boulder valley youth hockey assn.

hope that works for you.If you have Any ?'s just ask.I'm new to this board, I may not be too quick to reply but I'll try to check back.

This is the first season in six years that I'm not playing in the RMHL. What team are you on?

I play with the police and firemen on either Tuesday or Thursday mornings. It depends what shift has to work on that particular day whether it's a really good skate or middle of the road. There are pickups right afterward that are supposed to be a higher level overall, but playing earlier in the day fits my schedule better.

Then I play a pickup on Saturday nights at Apex that is really good as long as one team doesn't have a game. The guy that rents the ice and then charges us for it plays on the Ice Dogs, who are one of the top C teams in the RMHL. They usually don't have games on Saturday night, so five to eight of them will show up and the pace becomes pretty good. Plus Jim is really good about scheduling goalies. He has a about eight goalies on his list and they know not to skip out.

I will be visiting Denver in July. Does anyone know the best shop to go to for hockey skates and hockey kit? - does not matter if they two are different stores. Will travel a bit if need be.

Thanks

The Player's Bench stores in the area will have a full range of gear, haven't been to a few of the other shops as I'm an hour south and have a few shops where I'm at. Some of the Play it Again sports have some real gems as well, just kind of hit or miss there.

Can anyone from the Denver area tell me which Bench store now has the "bargain closet" I know it used to be in the DTC, but that store is apparently gone, and sometimes you find gems in there.

I went to the Bench on Tamarrac (sp?) a couple of weeks ago when I was in town and they had the bargain closet. They had some helmets, skates and goalie equipment in there. I don't recall what else. Their inventory was a little light and I was told that they're waiting for the new inventory that comes out in the spring.

Since we pretty much lost all of our LHS in our town, it was kind of nice to be able to go to a store and try something on prior to buying it.
