Sens Need Break

Recommended Posts

Senators are 2-5 in last 7. The 2 wins were against the Pens. They have scored 6 goals in the 5 losses and given up 19. It may not be a losing streak but it is definitely a slump. All teams, no matter how dominant, hit the dead days of February. The Sens need the break to recharge their batteries. Varada got his bell rung by Petrovicky tonight. The Sens announcers wanted Petrovicky to get 20 to life with no chance for parole. He got 2 minutes instead. While it was a tough hit with questionable intent, there is an old saying: what goes around, comes around. Vaclav had been overdue to be on the receiving end of such a crunch for a long time. He is no choir boy.

I have to wonder if Havlat would've helped them through this. He made that second line and was a constant threat to score. Sure he did some dumb things, but you had to be careful when he was on the ice. Without him, they seem to lack secondary scoring (except against the Leafs and Pens).

The biggest key for the Sens is keeping Hasek healthy. Emery just isn't up to the task of being the Sens #1 goalie. Havlat being injured doesn't help. Without him they don't have any real secondary scoring. Be interesting to see if the Sens make a trade to get scoring help or wait for Havlat to get healthy.

Smolinski has been great of late

4 points in his last 8 games, 2 against Pitts?

They've toyed with splitting up the top line. He needs someone to play with and isn't a number one center. When he's good, the Spezza/Heatley Combo usually suffers.

I'm pretty sure Bochenski was just called up?

But he doesn't seem like he has developed into a consistent NHL scorer yet.

and although Smolinski has 4pts in the last 8Gs he has 4pts in the last 4
