Why do people become goalies?

In answer to the original question: Because you can tick off a lotta people all by yourself. Really good people. Like the word's best offensive players and an entire nation.

Note: I'm not a goalie but I'm Canadian and I just finished watching Martin Gerber do just that. Amazing. It was what, a 29-1 shots on net differential in the 3rd period? Crazy.

BTW: I watched the game on a frozen lake at the US National Outdoor Hockey Championship in Eagle River, WI. The responses of all the people there would speak volumes to answer your question as to why guys want to play net. Here's another:

Funny thing is I've never seen a golaie put their hands up and say well that goal was my fault. I play D and dont mind admitting when I've made a mistake but on soft goals the goalie normally just had a mini freak out at someone!

Yeah I take the blame if it's my fault too.
