Update of old roller blades

Recommended Posts

I have some Mission skates that are about 10 years old.

I don't recall the model # but they were around $90 at the time.

I used to play pickup on asphalt.

I'll be playing indoor summer league on rubber (like) matts that they put over the concrete in a thawed ice rink.

Should I look at new skates or just look at updating my wheels?

It depends on the condition of your skates and your budget.

If the skates are pretty well used or are starting to break down, you could do with new skates, if not new wheels could do fine.

But if your budget can afford it, getting new skates can only really help, since then skates have advanced a lot, they have got much lighter among other things. The best thing to do is to try on some newer skates, and see how they compare to your current ones, if you prefer the better fit and light weight feel of the newer skates,or are happy with your current ones.

I'd keep your existing skates as your outdoor/backup pair and look for a good deal on some new skates that come with some indoor wheels. To upgrade your old skates you'd have to buy new indoor wheels anyway if you didn't want to slip everywhere. You could probably use new bearings as well. New middle of the line skates or closeout models from the last year or two should be much better than your 10 year old $90 skates.

As long as you're not looking to buy a current model top of the line skate you should be able to find a skate with indoor wheels that's much better than your 10 year old skates for less than $200...and if you search the forums here you can see which skates people like and which ones they had durability problems with. You should definitely read the "worst skates you've ever owned thread" to avoid some of those skates. In general people really seem to like the 06 mission line so going with a middle of the line 06 mission like the 5500 would probably be a good bet if they fit your feet properly, but there are plenty of other options.
