The Las Vegas Penquins?

Recommended Posts

Todays Las Vegas Review Journal 2/16/2006:

Talk of an NHL team in Vegas.

"Is there even a team ready to take a midnight flight to Vegas?"

"The Pittsburgh Penquins are reported to be exploring the idea of relocation. Kansas City, Houston, Portland, Seattle and Winnipeg are other potential suitors for the team"

"a group interested in buying the Penquins had Las Vegas atop its list of preferred cities"

I didnt see anything in those articles about Vegas though.

The Pens would play at the Thomas and Mack center till another arena would be built per the RJ.

Veags has been mentioned as has Kansas City, Houston, Portland, Winnipeg and Hartford. If the Pens get the license for slot machines then they will stay in Pittsburgh. If they don't get the license, who knows where they'll go.

Do you have a link to the story? I searched but couldn't find the story.

Can't see the Pens in Vegas personally. 'Nevada' and 'penguins' are rarely used in the same sentence.

The Winnipeg Jets moved and were renamed the Coyotes, remember. The Whalers became the Hurricanes, the Quebec Nordiques became the Avalanche and the Atlanta Flames became the Calgar.... nevermind.

After the publicity that the NHL got over the last two weeks I think they will do everything possible to avoid having a team in Vegas for the next few years. I would think they would ask the casinos to take Hockey off the board at a minimum.

Kansas City and Portland are I believe the most likely. However, it seems like each location that wants the Pens has a valid argument or point on why they should get them. Las Vegas would be stupid though. Could anywhere in Michigan or Minnessota support another team? The Wild have been sold out for what, every home game they've had?

Last I heard, Paul Allen wasn't interested and any new ownership should be part of the arena ownership.

Las Vegas might not be the best idea for an NHL team, but I'm pretty sure they would get some support. I live in Vegas and have attended a few ECHL games here, and while not many fans in the stands know the first thing about hockey, they show up and cheer them on. Plus taking hockey out of the sports books would'nt be a big deal, myself and my friend I think are the only two that bet on it anyway. They are still working on trying to bring the Marlins here too I think, although I doubt either would happen. I can only dream of NHL in Vegas. Oh well, thank god for Center Ice package.

I could see the NHL in veags doing really well. The casinos would probably buy large groups of tickets and tons of luxury boxes for their high-rollin' guests and loads of hotel/ticket packges would be sold as well. I would imagine fans from just about any team across the league would love to combine a road game in with their vacation on one or two instances. I know I'd make the trip for sure if the Rangers were going to be there.

The only way Minnesota could possibly support another team (and it would be a longshot) is if the Stars moved back and started playing in Minneapolis. There are enough hockey fans here who grew up on the North Stars that I think they would draw quite well (until the novelty wore off), and it would play into the Mpls vs. St Paul rivalry. With that f*@#er Norm Green no longer the owner, the fans would not hold the 90's exodus from MN against the team. I do think it would significantly cut into Wild attendance, however, and would not be sustainable for more than a few years. Pure fantasy, I know, but it would be cool.

The Wild selling out every home game in history speaks volumes about the efforts the ownership and management have gone through to reach fans at a grassroots level. There is definitely a sense of community for Wild fans, and a surprising air of nostalgia for a team that has only been around for five seasons. If I remember correctly, attedance for the Stars was pretty brutal in their last few seasons here, and they were a pretty good team. There is too much good college and high school hockey here, with far lower ticket prices, for an NHL team to take its fans for granted.

If they renamed them then it wouldn't be so odd but the Las Vegas Penguins doesn't sound right.

I'm sure this is just posturing, but I saw this interesting tidbit in today's Boston Herald:

"Local fans were expressing their concern here on the airwaves after a spokesman for Blazers owner Paul Allen said the future of the franchise in Portland is in some doubt. According to the leader of Allen’s investment firm, the club is estimating $100 million in losses over the next three years. . . ."

It would appear to lower the chances of an NHL team arriving in Portland.

I think Portland could be a good market. There is a natural geographic rival in Vancouver and the only other sport to contend with is basketball. There is no baseball or football to contend with for corperate dollars. If the team is owned by arena management, the team can lose money and still generate a profit for the company. That happens for several NHL teams.

As for that quote, I can see it increasing the odds of them getting ahockey team as the NHL salary cap is a lot more owner-friendly than the NBA cap is. If they sell or move the NBA team, they will need to find something to help fill the building.

Are you saying the NHL salary cap is more friendly to an owner because it's more finite?

Yes, the NBA cap is a soft cap that has a number of exceptions and a luxury tax. I believe the "cap" was around $49M for last year, as you can see from the link below many teams exceeded it.

What happened to the good ol' days when the Celts and Lakers outspent everyone else? B)

The Celtics drafted and traded better than anoyone else. Robert Parish and the pick that was Kevin McHale for Joe Barry Carrol? Signing Danny Ainge away from the Blue Jays. Those were brilliant moves. Then you have them drafting Bird as a junior and signing him after his senior season, something that caused the NBA to change the rules.

Why not the Las Vegas Gamblers?!? That would be appropriate for the city and the current theme of the NHL season.
