Well, I assume you are talking about types of service. There are two, GSM and CDMA. GSM Stands for Global System for Mobile Communication. CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access. CDMA uses less bandwidth to cover more area, and is a more advanced technology. It is used by companys such as Nextel, Verizon, and Sprint. GSM is used almost exclusivly in Europe, and by many companys in North America. Phones with sim cards are GSM phones. Companys such as Cingular, ATT, and T Mobile use GSM. There are also other technologies such as TDMA, but they arent really used by any main companies.

Nextel is iDEN(Integrated Digital Enhanced Network). It is a specialized mobile radio network technology that combines two-way radio, telephone, text messaging and data transmission into one network.

Nextel uses sim cards, and isnt GSM

You are correct, I do appologize. Iden is based off of TDMA, and was developed by Motorolla. Basically, it is TDMA, with some enhancments for the two way capablities.
