Why don't the Av's wear maroon/white gloves?

Recommended Posts

I was watching a Sharks game a while back and I like how their gloves are black but have some teal to them.  It got me to thinking about if I played on the sharks, I would have a custom pair of practice gloves made up that were mostly teal, with some black.  I think that would look really cool and be kinda fun, but you wouldnt want that for your whole team as they are off the wall and a bit tacky.  So I would assume that something like that might be some of the teams thinking.  Imagine yellow Bruins gloves, with some black and white.  Its the same as Teppo Numminen's white gloves that he uses for international play (I think its him).  Again, they are cool, but a team with all white gloves would be out there.

Just my two cents.

Although cool, your idea wouldn't work with the majority of the teams.

The equipment manager on each team has say on his teams colors with regards to are how they are used by each company.

For example, earlier this year, we received a memo from the NHL because a company changed the way the Sharks gloves were supposed to be screened with all of the companies logos. The Sharks gloves are all black, TEAL print with white outline for the mfg. logo on the cuff roll. The specific company did the opposite, white with teal outline, which is not how the team calls for it.

As far as pants go, what is put on the pants (mfg. logo, team logo, stripes) is up to each each team to decide. For example, in LA, the mfg. logo is on the back left thigh of the pant and there is no team logo on the front. The NHL logo always goes on the right rear thigh and is mandated that it go there.

As far as Teppo (great guy by the way), the man owns Montreal Hockey and in IIHF play, I don't believe there is a rule with regards to team color. Either way, his white gloves certainly match Finland's colors.

I agree with what you said, but I was just saying that if I were in the NHL and played on the Sharks, I would have some extra money to throw around on gear (I know the team picks up gear, but I figure things for my own amusement would come out of my pocket) I would have a pair of custom gloves made for practice only with teal as the main color and the other colors accents. The rest of my post was supposed to be examples of why that would't work for games, but could be fun for practice. I way I see it is a lot of guys have a couple of pairs of gloves and this was just a way to have some fun with them. They wouldn't be for use in games, just practice, just for fun. Again you could do yellow practice gloves if you played in Boston, etc. Just to mix things up a bit.

SRI, when did the rules come into play where the pants have to have the shield on the back (as far back as i can remember), the minimum amount of logos on the mits, and only frontal logos on the helmets? i ask because im looking at some older forsberg cards when he was on the avalanche and has a bauer 5000, with all the logos: front, side adjust clips, and upper sides....whats up with that lol?

Unfortunately, just knowing how the system works, and since the equipment manager orders everything, this just wouldn't fly...even if you were paying for it out of your own pocket. Even more so, this wouldn't happen in San Jose or Boston, as they are some of the more conservative teams out there.

Don't get me wrong, I think it would be cool. It just wouldn't fly with a majority of the teams.

I hear that man and agree. I realize that it probably wouldn't happen, mainly because as much as I hate to admit it, my skills just aren’t where they need to be to get called to the show, and with the way things work, its not really a realistic option anyway. Its always been my style to have the outrageous thing (like the Preds 3rd jersey, most people hate it, but I love it cuz its so different and out there). I wish that options like the different practice gloves were allowed and more of an accepted thing. One thing you hear is that the NHL doesn't really have any standout personalities. And even though they are just practice gloves, finding ways to get the players personalities to come out a bit would be rad. I could see a guy like Roenick having some crazy purple gloves or something at practice, because he is that kind of guy and one of the few notable personalities of the NHL. I know this is along way from where I started, but to me, yes a team should look like a team when it plays, but it wouldn’t be a problem for the players to have a little fun when its not game time.

You bring up great points, but the players really don't care about something like this, I think mainly because in either Major Junior or NCAA, the stuff they provide is what you wear, and even there, it is mostly if not entirely conservative.

Yeah, I can see how that would be ture. I think part of it for me is my dream job would be working for some hockey company tinkering with jersey and equiptment and trying to do things that maybe aren't so conservative and try to make things a little different and fun. I'm not saying that id mess with the Habs jersey or anything sacred, but you get the idea. Another part for me is that I love hockey so much, I wish there were players that could be used to help draw people into the game, you know the Deion Sanders of hockey or something. We have such a great game it seems a shame that so many people dont really give it a shot.

Also while were on the glvoes, you have any pics of the white Brett Hull gloves?

I think as far as the NHL shield being on the pants, that dates back to '94 or so.

As far as the helmets go, only the front mfg. logo is permitted and I think that goes back to 2000 or 2001 when the gloves were scaled back on their logos and size.

The same goes with goal equipment. The size can only be so large and can only be one mfg. logo and one model "attribute."

I'm sure it is only a matter of time before player sticks get cut back on the number of logos. Fortunately, with the rather "narrow" stick height, you can only get a logo about the size of 1 1/2" high x 10" to look clean enough to read, so maybe the NHL will leave this one alone.

I was just watching a game earlier tonight and thinking of this topic. I'm surprised there isn't a team that requires all sticks to be a specific color like red, black or blue.
