replaced blade on R2XN10 OPS

last night I removed a the broken blade from my r2xn10 one piece. I had to sand off the paint to get the blade to come out. No big deal really, and after I heated it up the blade came out with little trouble. The interesting thing was that at the top of the peg, stuck to the glue was a piece of regular squishy black foam. I am wondering what it's purpose was. Perhaps to elp with vibration? Or to help fill up some room from the taper? Anyone know?

I had the same foam inside the butt-end of my M-1.
