cutting shaft question

I have a shaft that is a bit too flexy for me but its the right length. So i wondered if cutting a bit of the shaft and sticking a wooden butt end will make it stiffer?

Nope, shafts are primarily dependant of lenght (besides actual flex ratings). Wood and composite would not make any difference.

I disagree.. the shorter you make the stick, the stiffer its going to get. It wont be a BIG change, but it will make it stiffer.

When a composite shaft gets shorter, it does not loosen up. The once 100lbs of force that it took to flex it an inch now is obsolete because the shaft is shorter and more force is needed to flex it 1 inch. This is IF you insert a wooden butt. I have never seen anybody flex a wooden butt before. Basically what Squirrel is saying is that even if the shaft was cut down to 1 foot long and it was a 100 flex rating, it would still take the same amount of pressure/weight to flex it 1 inch as its former 54inch self.

Sorry.. but I disagree.

The shaft then no longer has a flex point but gives it to the 54" long wooden butt end plug. Just like a wood stick with a foot secton of composite.

would cutting a composite stick and putting in a wooden plug make the stick stiffer or just restore the same flex it had before the cut. I want to stiffen my stick without losing length, I would be cutting 8" or so off and then adding the same length wood plug. would it make a difference?

It might make it stiffer. You figure you're putting a previously non existent joint at the end of the stick (Where the butt end actually slides into the shaft). Think of the tenon inside the stick as a reinforced area. Stiffer by how much, I wouldn't guess, but probably not much or if it's even noticeable.

One thing that intrigues me is the joint itself. Does the shaft below the joint act as a shortened shaft, while the part above it at like an (say) 8" wood stick would?

It'll change the flex point, possibly altering the flight pattern of shots. It should be fine though

basic physics, you cut down the stick and it will make it stiffer, but throwing an extension will just give you more leverage and torque to flex the stick as if it were never cut down. id say dont do it because youd just be making the stick heavier with a big wooden extension in it. i dont know about any of you guys but i can definately feel a change in flex after even putting a 1 inch extension on a stick

In theory yes, but not what you are looking for. The stiffness rating for a shaft is based on it's total length. Anytime you shorten it you are reducing the length of the lever arm acting on the puck..so yes, it will feel stiffer. Now, if you are just cutting off six inches of composite and replacing it with wood...I would have to say no, it will not feel stiffer, without shortening the lever arm you will not get a stiffer shaft, just a heavier one. You are better off buying a shaft that is the flex you want at the length you require.
