Prices

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering, since the Canadian dollar is catching up on the american dollar, why don't the companies lower their prices in Canada, or the inverse in the states.

I travelled to Vermont last week and I found that hockey equipement was much cheeper in the states. My friend bought an OPS he payed about 230$ u.s. for. When I went to my local store, the same stick was about 300$ can.

What's the deal with that, the canadian dollar is at 91.02 cents american, but yet, there is at least a 25% difference between prices here in Quebec and in Vermont.

Do any of you guys know if hockey companies will be lowering their prices in Canada (or brign them up in the states). Cause if they don't, I'm serouisly thinking about buying my gear in the states in the future.

The 20% + Duty charged by the Canadian government for hockey products coming into Canada doesn't help.

The prices aren't changing YET because the majority of the products are made in the Orient, and they are purchased using US Dollars.

Yes, but since they are purchased with american dollars, it also means that it's cheeper for canada, since the canadian dollar has a higher value than a few years ago. My point is that prices haven't changed for many years now, even if the canadian dollar is getting stronger. Since it's cheeper now to buy stuff with american dollars, prices should be going down, but they're not.

Give it time, the Canadian dollar will drop again.

Just so you know, according to experts, the canadian dollar will reach the american dollar in 2007, and probably will go over it.

Dont get me started on canadian taxes. You make more for the goverment then yourself.

I would have to imagine most wholesalers - retailers have to be somewhat agreed -- locked in on the dollar conversion rate -- or someone could be loosing alot of money.

If you are including the GST charged, 20% is close. But if you are referring to the duties specifically, they range from 2.5% for sticks to 18% (or maybe 15%) on skates.

From what I understand, all companies pass along the GST to their customers, effectively reclaiming it, so the net difference between the States and Canada should only be the duty.

It's mentionned in many business magazines, like The Economist, or Le Journal des Affaires.

SRI's concept is called "ratcheting up". Once a market is used to a certain set of prices, keep charging those prices even if the exchange rate becomes more favourable.

About the futures rates for the Cdn Dollar vs the US Dollar; it's not because the Cdn Dollar is getting stronger. The US Dollar is expected to drop w.r.t. the rest of the world currencies. The futures rates (warrior37's rates) is the future currency exchange trading rates, set by currency traders (the experts).

Speaking of the American/Canadian dollar. I was looking back at the MSH Jersey thread the other day. You know...if that thread went up NOW, it would cost me 6 bucks less than it did when I ordered and paid for it.

The dollar situation is brutal, I haven't really looked at the prices this year, but if you look at highend skates if the costs are the same(or close) to last year. The US selling price will be close to Canadian's costs. Its got to be hard being a Canadian border shop. These stores will be losing alot of the Americans that might have came over and possibly some of the Canadian customers will start crossing the border for the better prices.
