skating with goalie skates

Recommended Posts

Tried on some goalie skates for the first time in my life.

Almost wiped out turning. Felt like inline skates since there was no curve to the blade.

I was trying to turn sharply the way I do with normal hockey skates. Found that I had to put more onto the heal and really spread my legs further apart.

Any suggestions on learning with with goalie skates

Wear leg pads with them and then lots and lots of skating while wearing both. There really isn't an easier way that I found.

Good idea, the open session today was vacant (one old figure skater lady).

She could not figure out what the heck I was doing skating forward then backwards to the same point. I'll bring the leg pads next time.

I guess if more figure skaters show up, I can build up some steam and take a few of them out. With the leg pads I can just slide tackle them without hurting myself. That should keep the ice from getting all cut up.

I think that trying to skate without the pads doesn't work too well b/c they're designed to be skated in with pads attached, so limiting the movement of your legs to what the pads allow makes it easier to get a feel for the skates, not that I'm the best skating forward or goalie, but I've found that was a pretty easy way to get to the point of doing turns and crossing over while wearing my pads.

Like you said you need to spread your legs wider than you usually would with player skates. Its just something that you need to get used to and it will take time. Just keep skating with them as much as possible and it will get better.

Thanks for the advice. I played in net last night at a team scrimage.

Man you were right, way different with pads. I did not wipe out and eventually got used to them. I may have had the straps on too tight. Not exactly sure. They were comfortable but I was really tugging on the straps when I was trying to stand straight up to rest. Not the strongest shooters on our team but being in net sure gives you a different perspective on things. I saw a lot of things they could have done to get more goals on me but they didn't do. I thought my biggest fear would be sweating too much (I sweat like a pig) or my quads getting tired. neither was the case. Biggest problem I had was my stick hand wrist. I think I had a minor sprain re-aggrivated some. I'll have to work on strengthening the wrists up some more.

It takes a while to get your wrist/forearm strength up, so I wouldn't worry much about that. The strapping might take a while to find out what is best for you, I know I spent a few months before I got it to where it was loose enough to butterfly, but tight enough that I felt I still had control of them when I recovered or was challenging. I sweat a lot too and you know it's not really an issue unless you're playing a 2 hour pick up game, during a normal game it isn't really a problem b/c there's plenty of stoppage to drink/cool off.

Yeah if your pads are too tight they wont rotate on your leg and as you said wont be perpendiclar with the ice. Try different amounts of tightness and when you find one you like use it and see how you do. Being comfortable in your pads is a big thing that affects your play.

it's all going to be personal preference, personally top 2 staps are always loose, everything else just tight enough to keep the pad in place, just find what works for you...
