fedorov#91 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2006 Hey, any could any guitar players give me the name of an effects pedal that produces a really, really, really fuzzy sound a la Mudhoney?Cheers
Squirrel 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2006 It's a little pricey but you should check out Doubleshot distortion. I have one and can really get some thick fuzz tones out of it.

dix0r 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2006 i've never liked fuzz pedals. still, i bought a russian big muff to mess around with...didn't change my mind. didn't have any "bite" if that makes sense. i guess i'm more into straight forward "raw" rock/blues tones. Chadd 916 Report post Posted May 31, 2006 I love my Big Muff Pi What do ya think of the Big Muff chadd? I like it but I keep the intensity backed off quite a bit. If you really crank it, the tone gets pretty harsh and I like it "thicker". I modified my Vox wah for the same reason, now the effect is concentrated more in the mid range. Cheesehead 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2006 Boss DS1, not fancy, but it gets the job done.

freq019 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 I second the big muff piLooking at the guitar geeks site makes me think I have an earlier version because it looks like the russian one but its green and very soviet looking, hell the circuit board inside looks like a a bread board. And I don't remember it being that expensive but I bought it a long time ago.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 I have the Sovtek re-issue, it's big, ugly and green

fedorov#91 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 Yeh, thats what i meant by the black one lol seems to be the cheaper one.Alright, so its between the Boss DS-1 and the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi russian one, so anyone else any input? Remember im looking for the fuzzy-ist tone available

Remember im looking for the fuzzy-ist tone available if price is a factor i gpt my DS-1 for $45, but if its not,i would probably go with the other one.also the fuzz is different on different guitars. if it has humbuckers(SG), the fuzz will not be as loud. if it has single coils(stratocaster), then its pretty good
fedorov#91 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 Well i can get a pretty good deal on one, £22 dunno what that is in dollars. I would be playing it through both pick-ups.

He was taking electronics in college and had access to all kinds of parts so we made a few bucks selling various boxes that we made.

Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 I wish I still had a couple of those old boxes, they all sounded a little different. I use a DOD classic tube box and a DOD bifet preamp an addition to the Sovtek box. The classic tube sounds better with solid state amps and the sovtek works better with tube amps. The classic tube just isn't very fuzzy. It's always nice to have multiple options to shape your tone.
dix0r 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2006 1) are you sure it's really a fuzz pedal you need? you should give an example of a song or songs that have the tone you're looking for...2) what's your current rig? or at least, what model of guitar and amp will you be using most with the pedal?3) price range? dix0r 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2006 a DS-1 is more of a distortion than a fuzz. it sounds pretty harsh and thin, IMO. i think the most popular fuzz pedal (tone wise) is probably the Zvex Fuzz Factory...the most popular fuzz pedal (sales wise) is probably a Big Muff. at least that seemed to be the consensus from the store i worked at, and from talking to people. i think the reason for that is cause the Zvex is $230+ and I got my used Big Muff for $25. jay 1 Report post Posted June 3, 2006 You definitely don't want a Boss pedal for that sound. Big Muff all the way. That's what they were using when I saw them back in the 90's. For the most accurate tone a vintage one would probably be best but any of the newer issue big-muff's should come close as well. As for the guitar, you'll definitely come a lot closer to that sound using a strat and the neck pickup. Any guitar with humbuckers will not get that tone. I think they were both using blackface Fender Bassmans when I saw them too. That makes a differnce also.
