Yzerman Is Done

Recommended Posts

I think he did the right thing for himself and his family. Stevie Y knees are done, his eye injury and all made this kinda mandatory for him. He will more than likely have all sorts of problems down the road because of his bad knees so I think it is a good decision to retire so he doesn't aggravate his situation further more. A great player, future All of Fame player who should be inducted at his first try. He will be remembered by all hockey fans, young and old as one great dedicated hockey player who is one of the last player to be loyal to his team, a player who could have made more money elsewhere at some point in his career but decided to stay with the Wings. A class act, he surely will be missed by the hockey world.

Happy retirement Stevie Y, we'll miss you

Who's the new captain? Lidstrom?

most likely. and after him most likely zetterberg.

Why does everyone think Zetterberg should be the captain as of right now? I've heard this from so many different people. He is young and has only played three NHL seasons. Just because he is young and good doesn't mean he should be the captain. It worked with Stevie, but that was a completely different team make up. Detroit has so many vets on the team that will most likely continue to play there for a while. Obviously guys like Chelios and Shanny will be gone by the time Lidstrom is, but there is a good chance Maltby, Draper, and Holmstrom will still be there. There will probably be some older UFAs on the team by then, too. If McCarty was still on the team I'd think that he would be a good choice. Being captain isn't about being the best on the team.

I think people are talking Zetterberg because he appears to be the guy the team is building around for the future and will try to make their franchise player.

Draper- Not as long as Lidstrom is there.

Holmstrom- Nope, role player that does not carry any weight in the locker room.

Maltby- NEVER. 3-4th liner who is becoming more and more of a burden to the team. No guts. I have never seen anybody start more shit and then skate away when the other guy wants to have a go. I wish they would get rid of him while he still might be worth something more than a 5th round trade.

i think lidstrom or zetterberg are the clear choices. maltby, draper, grinder style players a team can lose, like lets say maltby wants more money and keeps playing like shit, ship him out of town, same with drapes. players like chelios, ummm after going 22 years with one captain do you think itd be a good idea to give it to a guy who has maybe 2 years left in the new nhl, also dont get me wrong i love cheli but im pretty sure besides the detroit organization he is one of the most hated players in the nhl. the whole age issue brings me to the lidstrom point. whos to say in two more years he doesnt test free agency or head home to sweden and win an elite league title with foppa, hes mentioned numerous times retiring and heading home. i know its knocking zetterberg here too, but what do you think was/wouldve been a bigger deal for the swedes: winning another stanley cup or beating their rival country for olympic gold, esp growing up in a country where national pride means more than the cup. with this said im going to agree with wicked wrister. hank is young and good, the building block of the wings for the next 15-20 yrs. we've never been in the room, maybe he leads by example and has a killer work ethic. id imagine that the swedes look up to him. remember detroit was full of vets when the kid who played for the petes came in and was named captain 22 years ago...

Steve Yzerman: A hell of a hockey player and a class act.

I still remember his unbelievable goal from a long time ago. He was almost parallel with the goal line on the left side of the opposition goalie and there was no shot and no angle as the goalie hugged the post and faced him. Still Yzerman shot and it went in over the goalie's right shoulder. I still can't believe it. Even the goalie did a double take.

Are you talking about the goal in the finals against Carolina? I have a great 8"x10" of that! Great goal!

No, this happened when goalie pads were a bit smaller in the late 80's/ early 90's. But still impressive!!!!!!

with lidstrom being captain he can handle the comparisons to steve better than hank can right now. hank's stall was right next to steve's for htose three years. mike babcock even said on tv that steve is the captain untill they go to camp.
