Not only does the 1000 pts help Brindamours case, but he also offers many intangibles such as being such a great defensive player as well...His leadership, faceoffs

Brind'Amour has never been the best player on a better than average team. In Philly he was behind Lindros and Leclair and on the current Carolina team he is behind Staal, Cole, etc... The HHOF isn't for good players, it's for the best of their time and Rod has never been the best on his own team.

Best in what respect though? Scoring goals? Rod was the best faceoff guy, best leader, best defensively reliable (does that make sense?). Maybe youre right and he wont get in but just saying hes not the best on his own team without justifying what you mean by best isnt a reason for him to not get in. And like I said earlier hes no first ballot guy but the type of guy who might get rewarded in a slow induction year. And Brind'Amour will finish his career with more points then both Leclaire and Lindros and probably Cole, Staal should have him in the new NHL if he has a long consistent career.

If you have to qualify what he is best at doing, you're misisng the point entirely.

I'm with Chadd. If we're going based on certain skills, Maltby and Draper would get in for penalty killing, and Perreault would get in for faceoffs.

Malty and Draper might have some intangibles, but they certainly will not have close to that when they retire.

I don't either. I was using them as an example of players who really excel in a certain aspect of the game, but are lacking in a lot of other places. This is where Brind'Amour falls for me.

What about a guy like Lehtenen who has had seasons upon seasons of stellar defensive play. He has averaged 'just' higher than .5pts/game during his career, but is this like the Norris trophy where points now seems to be the biggest decider?

I understand your concerns w/ Brindamour, but he will finish his career with around 1100 points and that is nothing to sneeze about. Malty and Draper might have some intangibles, but they certainly will not have close to that when they retire. And I think it is fair to look at the whole picture including leadership, defensive play, etc. I am not even a fan of his, but I even see this. Plus he has regularly led teams in minutes on ice, including this year w/ 24 mins/game

Last season he has 38 points in 78 games, 00-01 and 01-02 he had 56 and 55. His career average is below a point per game. The 1100 points are nice but it's due to longevity and not outperforming the rest of the league. The HHOF isn't for the good or very good, only the great.

I just looked up his profile on HockeyDB and he never led his team in scoring.

He had a 97 point season (with Lindros and Recchi), but if we're doing guys based off of one good season, throw in Bernie Nicholls.

This may be a really stupid question, but is there even an American goalie in the HHOF as of right now? I could see that being a reason why people would look at Richter.

Rod had 97 in 84 games, Lindros had his 97 in 65. Recchi had 107 in 84 that year.
