I started off with an Aprilia RS50 when I was 20. It was a 50cc sport bike replica with 17" wheels, 6-speed transmission, full fairings, and it would top out around 70 mph. It weighed around 200 lbs. and was all I could afford in regards to insurance. Great starter bike as it was nimble and and very forgiving. Here are some pics of the newest edition:

Some other good starter bikes are the Kawasaki Ninja 250, Yamaha Virago 250, and the Buell Blast.

Started out on the street with a brand new 1977 Harley Davidson Sportster-now 8 Harleys later I am giving it up for a while-in the last 2 years I have had 4 co-workers go down for good and 3 of my buddies have gotten nailed. I spent the last 4 years building a custom Softtail -I put 80 miles on it and had 3 people burn left turns right in front of me-Screw it -Its not worth dying for

I had had a few dirt bikes before that though-RM 125-Bultaco Pursang-Montesa Cota-TY 250

Learning to ride the dirt saved my ass more than once on the street...........

well that's a buzzkill

Yeah, I have been fortunate to never have been hurt. A couple of close calls, all of which were people that never even bothered to look before pulling out in front of me. A buddy of mine was not so fortunate though; he had a brand new 1999 Ducati 748 with full carbon body work, cans, etc. Riding home one night from work an 82 year old woman in an Oldsmobile pulled out right in front of him and he broadsided her. Thankfully he had his helmet on and only broke some bones and got a fair amount of road rash, but the duck wasn't so fortunate
