Uniforms

Recommended Posts

All the bitching about the new Sabres jerseys and hopes of a Washington return to the classic red, white and blue colour scheme has made me wonder whether or not the consensus of the public is that uniform changes are for the better or things should just remain the same.

Whenever the issue of the top NHL logos is raised there will always be the same teams mentioned, the original six, with a few others thrown in with respectable reasoning. However, franchises feel the need to update their team's uniforms in an effort to represent the fast paced and refined nature of both the league and their up and coming roster, this to many complaints.

For example, look at how out of place and almost laughable some of the expansion teams of the '90's appear when playing in meaningful games against the likes of Detroit. Compare that the superior design of the third jerseys of teams such as Minnesota and San Jose and you have what I believe to be a compromise for the masses.

My solution is to introduce a system similar to that of soccer over in Europe where, from my understanding, the home uniform changes one year, the road the next with the overall design remaining somewhat similar. Obviously, people will be against teams like Montreal and Toronto having a different jersey every year but with all the player movement and marketing towards a younger, growing generation how often are you going to see Joe Hockey Fan wearing the same Sakic or Yzerman jersey to games for over a decade?

Although there are some issues, mainly classic teams changing from their traditional jerseys, I feel that I have a pretty good idea here to allow for teams to sell merchandise to the same people over and over again but also represent the feeling of their on ice product with a uniform of the same feeling. The general guidelines at this point seem to be classic for winning, refined and trendy for up and coming with teams who are going to suck anyways trying something revolutionary in an effort to create interest.

Finally, in terms of the original six teams you would see small changes like the V-neck of the late '90s Leafs or the TML patch of the current jersey so it isn't like Chicago is going to go all out and make a complete overhaul like the Islanders and their horrible Fisherman idea.

I think the main reason behind jersey redesign is to generate revenue.

If I already have a Colorado away jersey, I'm not going to buy a 2nd one if it looks identical or almost identical. If they redesign the jersey to something noticably different, then I might spend some cash to keep current.

I don't like the idea of forcing a team to change thier design. If a team has a design that is very popular and sells well, what benefit is it to them to change.

If a jersey is selling well and is well liked, leave it alone. If it is unpopular and sells poorly, it might be time for a change.

I agree it's all about revenue. I hate the current B's uniform and wish they had stayed with the 1990 style.

At least they don't wear the pooh-bear full time.

Thinking about that jersey makes me turn out the lights and go to my happy place for a half hour.
