Some of you guys are missing the boat on this deal. It is a Salary DUMP for Cap space. The Canes are getting rid of Oleg's Cap money for a future deal. Johnson trade value was also greatly diminished since he said he would stay in school for the next Several years.

Even with all that, it is a great deal for the Kings. They may suck this year, but they have several Blue Chip prospects on offense, defense & in the net. Dean L is building a future winner in LA much the same way he built SJ, with homegrown draft picks & young players.

I was under the impression that the outgoing and incoming salaries were the same.

No it was that he told them from day 1 that he would be staying in collgege for a minimum of 2 yrs. This will be his 2nd. Rutherford got impatient with his defense real thin right now.

Willc , I think it may have been a case of Johnson getting frustrated with the team for the repeated attempts to sign him and the team getting frustrated with him for not signing. I give him credit for staying in school and not signing a deal just yet.

If he signs after this season which there is some speculation is going to happen Canes fans and everyone else are going to rip Rutherford for this deal. Rutherford did come out and say this was the best deal he was offered so he took it.

I can't blame the rationale the Canes used for this deal, they've gotten killed with losing players to FA, and desperately needed a defensemen now. Trading a prospect for help now? No problem (I'm a Yankee fan after all). But trading a 100% can't miss prospect? Not a good idea
