opinion on used skates

Recommended Posts

I'm a newbie hockey player and and looking for some better skates. I currently own a pair of CCM 451 Supertacks and I'm lookin for something more current. I had to buy and entire set of equipment this past summer to get ready, so I'm not looking to spend an arm and a leg. My LHS has got an absolutely huge selection of used skates and was thinking about seeing what they have. I've heard some people say to stay away from used skates, but what is the general opinion?

For beginners I don't see anything wrong with it so long as they're comfortable in them. From a budget perspective that makes sense because you may end up not playing long and want to give it up.

If you plan on staying around, hopefully you know your size in the major brands as there are a lot of good models on clearance.

Look for the fit - it is only a good deal if they fit well. I've bought a number of used skates over the years and have had very good luck with them.

If they are heat moldable you can reheat them which is a real benefit in buying better skates used.

Make sure they still have some steel left - sometimes used skates don't and by the time you add on the price of new blades it isn't a deal anymore.
